Arsenal v England
There's a survey going about on twitter asking opinions on club v country. I know I'm very firmly in the club camp and struggle to enjoy most internationals on any level, although the major tournaments can offer some glimmer of excitement on the odd occasion. The media love to slate anyone who dares to put club first these days, but was it really so different "back in the day"? I for one love the banter that goes with club football (win or lose), but rarely get a call from someone from San Marino or Venezuela wanting to wind me up about the England result?
All I see is meaningless friendlies robbing me as a ST holder of seeing the players week in week out I pay to watch...?

Re: Arsenal v England
We've run this one a few times on here over the years and I seem to recall it was mostly club over country.
I know I'm most deffo club over country. I find interlull footy quite boring and dislike the xenophobic shite that often creeps into any discussion of same. I too don't really connect with the rivalry at Interlull level but love the tribal rivalry with other clubs.

Id rather Arsenal won a corner than England won the world cup (im English!)
That said, i love the world cup, just prefer tournaments when England dont qualify - no idiots who dont watch football starting to pretend they know what they are talking about, flags hanging off cars........zzzzzzzzzz.

Club. Always club.
Used to go and watch Wales a lot as a kid. For the Euro 2004 qualifiers a season ticket for all 5 qualifiers cost 50 quid (25 quid for kids). Packed Millennium Stadium, actually very competitive in the qualifiers (ultimately blew it) - I was lucky enough to be going every other week to watch the best team in Europe and I loved it. It was a great chance to take your kids to watch proper football cheap.
It now costs about twice that to watch a cack team in a shit small identikit stadium out of town.

Arsenal all day!
I'm Scottish so I don't really have a choice, I'm not sure we even have a football team anymore...

I enjoy the WC mainly because of the South American and African countries.
It's the Arsenal all the way over England. Any team with Stevie Mee, Fat Frank and considers Glen Johnson/Kyle Walker international class FB's is never going to get my vote.

The national team doesn't seem to respect our club.
Our players always get called up for the shitty friendlies and end up getting injured, then are overlooked for the major tournaments.
I find it hard to support England. I hate half the players!

Hate to be pedantic...but there are 11 in the team, and 23 in the squad...so how can you hate half?LizLeGooner wrote:The national team doesn't seem to respect our club.

Arsenal over England every single day of the week.
I used to quite like international football, Italia 90 was brilliant, and then we had the nadir of Euro 96, idiots like Chris Evans and Danny Baker and z list celebraties on the bandwagon, and all of a sudden it was fashionable to love football and all you needed to be an expert was a flag on your car and a silly wig.

Despite the debate over the maths
that's exactly where I am... Find it really odd how people can berate opposing players on a Saturday, and then have a Stevie G / John Terry love-in on a Wednesday... I have noticed that my mates who support lower down teams (Gillingham) love England games - guess they don't face the same contradictions?
I do have to set a better example though... took my lad to see England v Belgium (at his request) when he was 7 and as they came out the tunnel he stood up out of nowhere and booed John Terry really loudly

Re: Arsenal v England
I'm definitely club over country on a week by week basis, but I did use to go to a lot of England games at Wembley and can say that ultimately nothing really compares to success in a big tournament for England over club success for Arsenal. Long time ago now of course, but I remember going to England v Scotland, Holland and then Spain in Euro 96...and then having people giving us the thumbs up on the M1 driving down to the semi final v Germany...like we were off too war!
Of course though, England really need to get to the quarter final stage before anyone feels like that so when it comes to releasing players etc I would definitely favour Arsenal.
But if I had a straight choice between Arsenal winning the League and England winning the Euros or World Cup...then I'm afraid it would definitely be England!

Re: Arsenal v England
always hated england since our best players never got picked for international duty during the mid-late eighties. players like paul davis, woodcock, robson, dicko, bould , smith even wright never getting the international recognition they deserved.
compare it to the shite players from liverpool and tottenham that got in for fuck all and it really annoyed me. these days I really don't care who goes because there isn't that same pride when a gooner gets an international call up like there used to be.
