Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a deal in principle to join Manchester United this summer.
United must now agree a fee with Arsenal after the World Cup, but Vermaelen hopes to move to Old Trafford and is preparing to leave the Emirates.
Central defender Vermaelen only has one year remaining on his Arsenal contract and has found himself pushed out of manager Arsene Wenger’s first-choice team by Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
New United manager Louis van Gaal is desperate to strengthen United’s defence and believes Vermaelen can find his best form under him.
The 28-year-old has been at Arsenal for five years after signing from Dutch club Ajax. He got off to a superb start with the Gunners, but injuries curtailed his progress.
Vermaelen earns around £70,000-a-week and it is understood he has verbally agreed a deal with United that would see him pocket around £100,000-a-week.

Players aren't allowed to negotiate with other clubs until six months before their contracts expire, so there shouldn't be any truth in this. However, I suppose agents can talk unofficially. There must be better options for him than Manure.
Arsenal cannot expect to receive more than £10million for Vermaelen with only a year remaining on his contract.
Vermaelen is currently with the Belgium squad in Brazil for the World Cup, but wants his future sorted out as quickly as possible once the tournament ends.
He shares the same agent as Robin van Persie and that is understood to have been key to United’s interest.
Arsenal have been preparing for the possible departure of Vermaelen by lining up a number of defensive targets including Steven Caulker and Virgil van Dijk.
Although Vermaelen is not a first-team starter for Arsenal any more, his departure to United would be another blow for Wenger after losing Bacary Sagna to Manchester City.

Yeah, but you haven't worked 30 years in football so you are wrong.

There is no place for that conventional kind of thinking at Arsenal these days.

As Arsenal legend Ivan Gazidis once said, ''we like to think we do things a little differently to everyone else''.

all part of a fiendishly cunning strategy by "Fourth is First" Arsene to strengthen our PL opponents' squads while bringing in frees like Kallstrom, Sanogo and (fill in name as latest is revealed in August)

can;t believe people are angry about selling tv5, he's been a frail captain and a massive liability at the back. even one of wenger's french freebies will offer more than him at the back. hopefully he gives the armband to per, he is one of few leaders in our squad

but we know he wont be adequately replaced that's the problem,im betting we will start the new season with no new signings at all and with the departures of TV and Sagna,Santi is apparently a target for Atletico Madrid so he may be gone and without the non returning Cesc, you couldn't make it up,we start every season weaker than the previous which you wouldn't think was possible considering how many positions have needed strengthening for years  :banghead:

Don't think Verm ever lived up to the initial promise. But put that aside......what other ''big'' club would sell/allow players to go consistently to it's own biggest domestic rivals? Just one......ffs :banghead: How many is it now ? RVP,Nasri,Clichy,Cole,Sagna,Adebayor,Vermaelen,Toure...the list goes on and fucking on.

If you've got two good CBs with a good partnership (which we finally have) then your 3rd choice CB is effectively just injury cover and Carling Cup fodder. With that in mind I don't think it's realistic to hope to improve on Vermaelen in any scenario, never mind with our transfer acumen (or lack thereof).

Agree with both of the posters above (start season weaker and selling good players to rivals).

ManU haven't really done business yet because they have a manager who is busy at the World Cup managing a football team.
We haven't done business because we have a manager who likes to line his pockets while saying that a very good propect of ours will be here for 'pre-season'.

this is just another stick to beat wenger with though, isn't it?

vermaelen leaving for united is akin to silvestre going to us. I actually think it's hilarious that they've started their summer business in this manner, he has to build a new defence and he signs someone who even wenger knows is past it. We'll make a couple of signings, they aren't going to be world class and everyone knows it but of course wenger will replace tv5 with someone of equal ability. I like to lambast wenger as much as anyone but I'm not really worried at this moment.

I don't doubt that there's a bit of behind-the-scenes shenanigans going on quite regularly but it always amuses me when I see media outlets declaring that a contract has been agreed before a fee or permission granted.
