The Summer 2014 TRANSFER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Bit like Baines and Johnson eh?

Sod whether he can defend or not.....when we've been raped and pillaged down the flanks at Chavski Bridge and he puts in a wicked cross to pull it back to 5-1, we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief

I for one thing Serge has looked exciting in the WC...positionally sound and works the channels well with a good final ball.

Works well as gives Jenko a good fight too.

What's the problem? We need a right back and he looks decent!

Agreed, I think he has been impressive, just don't let him take any corners after the other night!

He looks solid enough defensively. Johnson and Baines are gash.

They might not, as only average players need the excuse of needing a season to adjust to the premier league.

The role call of all these 'average' players that were average in their first season is quite shocking Henry,Bergkamp,Ronaldo,Pires,Bale(average for 3 seasons),...I am sure there are more more of these 1st season losers but I can't think of them right now.

Costa is a bit of a gamble for Chelski because I dont really see what he excels at.

I bet you didn't watch one single Atletico match during the season? He was good throughout the season and he will be good in PL too.

Every new player in a new league is a bit of a gamble. Change of environment, language, culture, way of life and all that.

Costa is the striker Mourinho's anti-football has been missing this season. Cesc is another matter though, if Mata didn't fit in how will he? I'm pretty sure that's just another Chelsea buy they made just so no one else will have him.

Do not agree.

Mata is a lightweight attacking midfielder, good passer and creative though, and gets goals.
Cesc is also a good passer and scorer but physically tougher and can tackle, can play central midfield, attacking midfield or even as striker.
He speaks English, knows London and knows the league like the back of his hand.

By that logic Wenger really has dropped a bollock by not bringing Vela back..

What he does in the Spanish league is irrelivant, I agree, I dont see what he excells in apart from having an edge that the PL defenders will be used to, can you see scum like Shawcross or units like Kompany being intimidated by him?

He scored goals last year but previous to this he has been a 10 goal a season man, I guess this gets overlooked becausr Chelsea spent big money on him?

TBF Cesc excelled here when the team was built to make him tick, it wasn't at Barcelona and it all went pear shaped, can you see Chelsea being built around him or do you see him having to fit into a team?

Quality player no doubt but he has shown himself to be a bit of a spoilt brat if things dont suit him, I also think the Chelsea supporters will see him as a playing versiom of Benitez, theres too much history for that move to go as it should, a few bad results or poor performances and they could easily turn on him.
