The sport may be the 4th or 5th popular sport over here but I'm fairly certain there's more fans of the game in total numbers than there is in the UK. I was at the viewing party in Chicago and there were around 100,000 people there supporting/watching the team and that was on a Monday afternoon.

I'm fairly certain that the USA has 5x the population of the UK. Don't get ahead of yourself.

of course...
that still doesnt change the fact that there are large numbers of fans here. does % or the actual # mean more? the whole "american's don't know the sport" thing is kind of played out, considering there's actually a larger amount of people that love the game here.

Sums it up that a team with Damarcus Beasley in it can get through their group and England can't.

But we've got Luke Shaw coming through and Ross Barkley - whoop whoop. The next 2 massively overrated players to take on the 'golden generation' banner

Was looking at the draw for the knockout stages and I think that it is an absolute certainty that the argues will at least get to semi's - they have a piss poor draw and even in the 2nd gear they will cruise through

New York Red Bulls have this season 70% filled their enormous 25,000-seater stadium despite being one of the biggest clubs and best teams in the USA playing in one of the largest metropolitan/urban areas on the planet with main ticket prices ranging from about 15-35 quid.

What a nation of football fans.

Pretty much. NYCFC are being pushed in a big way out here. They'll be playing at Yankee Stadium and I really don't see that getting packed out every week.

Football is gaining momentum out here, though. If the MLS can somehow raise its standard (it's currently God awful), then I can see football really, really taking off.

Oh, and I reckon that the US will win the World Cup (or come mighty close) within the next 20 years. Its just too much of a competitive nation not to, in my opinion.

northbank123 wrote:Brilliant from Messi. Although pretty dreadful for the keeper not even to get a dive in for the free-kick, was a fair way out, hardly thumped it and wasn't exactly top corner but a great hit nonetheless.

The Nigerian lad took his two goals well, first one was brilliant.
gutted I missed this game! I reckon semi's for Argentina this year

This. No doubt US football has it's core support and credit to these people who go against the grain and watch a proper sport, but the hype and jumping on the bandwagon during a World Cup, Olympics etc happens in every country, particularly if the team are doing well. Fuck, even when they hosted the sodding tournament the interest wore off as soon as the bandwagon rolled out of town

Why the need to mock the american interest in "soccer" ? :? For years it was THE largest participated sport amongst kids in the usa but sadly it feel down when they got to a certain age and had nowhere to go. As footie fans should we not welcome and applaud their efforts to help the game grow out there ? I see the same type of dismissive xenaphobia on their nfl.com website and the lack of respect they show european american football fans enrages me tbh and I didnt expect the same from footie fans seeing as it is already a worldwide sport

Where are NYCFC getting their players from? You'd imagine if they haven't already been picked up by an existing MLS club then they probably aren't too good. I know Villa signed but I was interested to know how they'll put a team together.

Not to mention, articles like this: http://www.anncoulter.com/columns/2014- ... #read_more

An extract or two, If I may:
Do they even have MVPs in soccer? Everyone just runs up and down the field and, every once in a while, a ball accidentally goes in. That's when we're supposed to go wild. I'm already asleep.
No other "sport" ends in as many scoreless ties as soccer. This was an actual marquee sign by the freeway in Long Beach, California, about a World Cup game last week: "2nd period, 11 minutes left, score: 0:0." Two hours later, another World Cup game was on the same screen: "1st period, 8 minutes left, score: 0:0." If Michael Jackson had treated his chronic insomnia with a tape of Argentina vs. Brazil instead of Propofol, he'd still be alive, although bored.

You can't use your hands in soccer. (Thus eliminating the danger of having to catch a fly ball.) What sets man apart from the lesser beasts, besides a soul, is that we have opposable thumbs. Our hands can hold things. Here's a great idea: Let's create a game where you're not allowed to use them!
