Has to be our big fucking German. Leave Ramsey out of it, Mert is perfect for the role.

I really don't give a rat's arse. The captaincy has been irrelevant since Paddy left.

Mertesacker - seems level headed and with a good sense of humour, respected by the others.

1989 what is so wrong about Vermaelen leaving?
He has never said anything anti-Arsenal, has kept physical fitness at peak as much as injuries allow, not like he has become fat or anything or seen falling out of nightclubs?

Players need to play regular games in their peak years.

I too voted for Sanogo because if Squillachi can captain the Arsenal in his second ever match when we played at The Bridge and got pummelled then why not Sanogo! :D

Because he wants to join the Mancs.

HAS TO BE the B.F.G All Day Long!

A born leader, even when he wasn't captain he was ordering the dfensive ranks and gave ozil a bollocking for not applauding the fans after we got beat....I just wish we had signe dhim sooner.

However as someone has already correctly pointed out the appointment of Captain to lead THE Arsenal has become something of a joke since PV4 left, I even remember that uber *word censored* almunia being given the armband once....I almost puked when I saw that !

ARTETA it is Mac. At 32 y/o, it sets him up nicely for a Spanish swansong when we sell him on next May.
It doesn't make too much sense to me though.
@ Daily fail .

WENGER OUT.
If it is Arteta it is yet another demonstration of the costly excess of Wenger's loyalty. Arteta has been a consummate professional on and (as far as anyone can tell) off the pitch but a) it's quite obvious that Mertesacker is the player who leads the team, and b) Arteta should not be getting any serious game time this year - he's lucky to be in the squad at all tbh given his showing last year.

Agree with this. It probably will be given to Arteta, so we will have a figurehead captain (like Vermaelen last season) but to all intents and purposes it'll be Meatsack as de facto captain.
