......for anyone who remembers him or was around in the late 70's / early 80's Stewart Taylor's book (due out this Friday) is a must-read. Once started, Gooners won't put it down

Looking forward to reading this, I dont know a huge amount about what happened to him later in life aside from an addiction problem.

don't think many (apart from those who knew him personally) knew or cared what was happening to him.....thought tony adams' "addicted" was very good but this book "knocks spots off" it. there's as much insight into the club (at that time) as there is into vaessen's life

Me too, was a 10 yr old, was literally crying and praying to the big fella upstairs that we scored and that I promised all sorts of things which I soon went back on (so you can blame me for the final defeat on penalties )

Before my time but a very interesting 3-part (I think) feature on him on this site a few months back. To be honest I never really bother reading the articles on this site but that one caught my eye and it was quite gripping.

For those of us who were there in Turin that night he was a legend , we knew of his fall from grace as one of our Lot Paul L. was another Bermonsey boy and knew him well .

We remember him with fondness and sadness !

What a night in Turin, listening on Radio 2..the mark of the achievement was the programme finished with commentary on Vaessen's goal, even though Nottingham Forest had qualified for the European cup final that night also.

Separate issue but young fans do not know they are born these days with wall to wall football on TV.. That night we had to rely on updates from Turin on radio as they concentrated on Nottingham Forest's semi final..Their game finished earlier than ours and we got the last few minutes live. When I see and hear plastic fans of any club mouthing about going to the pub to watch their "team" I wonder how many would be that interested if they had to hold a big radio up to their ear and walk around to get the best signal for a game or even results, while your mother tells you to put it down and study ?.

Paul Vaessen is forever in our folklore , but despite his very own Mickey Thomas moment he will never be remembered by football in the same way. Certainly those of us with memories of that night will never forget the name.

do you remember trying to good bbc reception i was walking everywhere with my radio as it kept cutting out and my mother shouting at me to go to sleep as it was a school night

"Live Football Action..every Saturday afternoon "....the line that the old BBC2 radio used at 3pm every Saturday , then it was updates from games until halftime and live commentary for the second half of a top game. Peter Jones and Alan Parry along with Dennis Law.. Peter Jones could paint pictures with his commentary.

Clearly remember listening to the radio that night & then ringing my best friend from school (we are still best mates today) asking him if he wanted to go down The Gunners for a celebratory beer.

He agreed so we drove down there in my old Cortina & there wasn't a soul around!

How times have changed with wall to wall matches on in every pub these days.
