The Summer 2014 TRANSFER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

and how any club would give their permission for their manager to be away on a jolly on deadline day beggars belief. bearing in mind our FIVE poor performances - shouldnt he be prioritizing the club ?
Negligent. We have a 19 year old as a back up for 2 cbs and a guy who points and claps a lot for DMC.

I have barely posted on this forum for two or three years, but, for what it's worth:

Welbeck can hold the ball up well. His displays for England have demonstrated as much.
He is 23 - so, many years ahead of him.
He is more likely than, let's say, Balotelli, to gel with the team.
A matter of weeks ago, fans were lauding the signing of Sanchez, plus the return of Campbell. So now we have Welbeck - more options.
His goal record as a starter for Man Utd is 1 in 3. Not bad then.
He wants to play through the middle...and he wants to prove himself.
In the current climate, £16m is not a great deal.

So I am optimistic.

On another topic, it would be a little more palatable if Arsene Wenger was adressed with a little less abuse on this forum. Granted, he is prone to eccentricity, and granted, we are somewhat short of defenders, but this constant "See you next Tuesday" stuff is not The Arsenal way, nor does it acknowledge the positives. This will probably be ignored, but at least I've had my say.

To a successful season.

The rumour about Falcao failing his medical isn't true...so that's it then, Welbeck will be joining us.
We all knew we needed a CB, DM and a CF. This morning I thought we'd sign a third choice CB in the 10m bracket and then either a top class DM or a top class CF. ..but not both...
Looks like we're only getting Welbeck ....I've been quite harsh about him today (and in the past).
I obviously hope he proves me wrong but even if he does its a missed opportunity yet again from the club.
How the manager and board think we have enough defensive cover is beyond me.
This whole charity match in Rome thing is one of the biggest piss takes in a long line of piss takes. It must have been arranged months ago and surely someone at the club thought "hold on Arsene, you cant fuck off on a jolly up on your busiest day of the year". This tells me the club/manager thought all business would be done by today but the Giroud injury threw a spanner in the works and welbeck is a panic buy. Even if Giroud wasn't injured and we wasn't expecting to do any business surely the manager should be at work incase the chance to sign an unexpected player turns up.
Going to bed now and hopefully wake up to the welbeck transfer hasn't happened.....sorry but just don't think it's going work out :(

Welbeck is shite. Sorry, he hasn't got any talent whatsoever. He is like Gervinho.....come to think of it I would rather we had re-signed Gervinho.

We give them RVP and we give them 75% of that for Welbeck FFS. I'd rather have nothing, it's a truly shit deal.

It would be nice but unfortunately there's no chance of that.

shock of the day - tom cleverly is on 80,000 a week. FFS thats a joke. 4 MILLION a year for that useless POS.

football has gone mad - same as falcao, 20m for a one year loan and you pay his wages of 12million - 32 million for a player for a year. united are mugs paying that.

Don't panic yet boys and girls. If they don't send all the relevant paperwork by 1am,then the deal is off as far as the FA is concerned anyway.

So fingers crossed the fax will jam in a minute and not be fixed till tomorrow.

Much to my surprise, the majority of posters over at Red Cafe actually are pretty bummed about him coming to us.

Not gonna lie; I thought he was shite and was extremely annoyed at him playing on the wing for England in the World Cup. However, the lad's a Gooner now so he's got my support :barscarf:

Two things;

1) By all accounts, if he is to play on the wing he should be able to help out on the defensive side a lot more than Özil and Cazorla.

2) All the United fans say that his position is up front but he was just never played there (sounds familiar). He'll definitely get a run there for us (until January at least) so let's see.
