Our aging problem

Post by SpendSumEffinMoney »

This doesn't seem to get brought up often but it is becoming worryingly clear that we are turning into a club of geriatrics

Merty is 30 this month
Kosc is 29 in a few weeks time
Debuchy is 29
Flamini is crap but also 30
Arteta 32
Ros 33
Cazorla 30 in December
Podolski 29

That is quite a large contingent. Most worrying is Merty and Kos, as they are probably the best defensive partnership we have had since Campbel and Toure.

No, soon after he rejoined we spotted him. We don't rush into banning people and a few things had to be checked out.

But more importantly, who told you about our weekly orgy??!! :x :banghead:

Yep. Unfortunately that is about the level of "intellect" we are dealing with...

Anyway his post on this thread raised an interesting point. Unusually for us in the last 7-8 years we are now faced with about a third of the first team that will need replacing because of age. On top of that we seem to have quietly accepted that we cannot grow our own. So we are faced with an interesting challenge. How do we replace all the geriatrics while maintaining the balance of the team.

Did I really just type "maintaining the balance of the team?" Anyway you get my drift.

He replaced Sagna with Debuchy who is imo marginally better but there's very little in it. Sagna was a good player for us, as is his replacement.

Serious injury permitting Mertesacker has a good 3 or 4 years left in him minimum, it's not like he's going to lose his pace is it?

Koscielny will have to adapt his game as he gets older but 29 is by no means old for a CH.

For all his excellent service to the club replacing Arteta is something we should have done this summer, that one can hardly take the manager by surprise.

Flamini came on a free so we're hardly losing much sell-on there, would be surprised if he is still here beyond next summer. Plus, see Arteta.

Rosicky and Podolski have already been more or less squeezed out of the club, especially if Wenger has plans for Campbell.

Chamberlain is primed and ready to take Cazorla's place. Frankly, on the form of the last 12 months it's hard to argue that Cazorla is ahead of him on merit.

In summary I think at the moment we have quite a good balance between youth and experience which is what you'd expect at a top club. I can't remember the policy of throwing kids to the wolves ever going down a treat with too many of our fans 8)

Should have been more explicit. If we're not replacing with home grown, we will have to buy and with AW in charge of the purse strings.......................

Three seasons ago we were too young. These players are prime champions league winning age. Looking at this list tells a different story;
Szceszney
Gibbs
Chambers
Jenkinson
Wilshere
Ramsey
Chamberlain
Walcot
Ozil
Sanchez
Welbeck
Gnarbey
Sanongo
Coquelin

All between 18-26 years old and there are some established international players in there. We are fine and some would say well balanced squad.
