The implications of this result are huge. I could see us losing to Galatasaray away, and not beating Dortmund at home. So that could mean, if we do the double over Anderlecht, that we finish on 9/10 points- and it will be a tough ask to get through on that many. One thing is for certain- our chances of that crucial first spot look slim- and so it will be a round of 16 defeat once again.

SSN: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits his side were 'average' following their 2-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Goals from Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the Gunners bottom of Group D following Anderlecht’s draw in Galatasaray.

After a disappointing performance in the Signal Iduna Park, Wenger believes his side were unfortunate in the first half but concedes that they were convincingly outfought in the end.

“I think we were not at the requested level tonight. They deserved their win,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“I still believe that on top of that, we were a bit unlucky as it was a throw-in to us 10 seconds before half time. We conceded the goal just after that.

“Despite our very average performance, we had plenty of chances. That’s a little bit of a paradox,” he added.

“We could’ve been leading the game, but they had plenty of chances too.”

Wenger defended his striker Danny Welbeck after the 23-year-old missed a couple of good chances, and believes that Dortmund’s energy levels were as a result of their ‘easy’ game against Freiburg on Saturday.

“Welbeck was dangerous but he tired in the second half. He couldn’t finish tonight but he looked lively and for all the rest he did well,” Wenger said.

“He needs a goal to get that off his shoulders.”

“They had a higher level of energy. They had a much easier game than us on Saturday but it’s not always scientifically predicable.”

Arteta has been painfully past it for a while now but tonight was just an embarrassment. He was short of what is required in just about every department. Far from the only one to blame but any self-respecting DM would be sick at the thought of the players picking up the ball and having time to turn in those positions for the first two goals tonight. Where was he???

It was obvious that Wrnger would stay hugely loyal to a fault with him (as he's done with others) and the captaincy disaster confirmed this. It's sad really because apart from the obvious damage to the team, Arteta had two stellar seasons as a consummate professional in a poor side and that should have been him Arsenal legacy. Instead he'll be remember as this ponderous donkey.

So many Gooners forgave Wenger for 9 years of shite because we won the FA Cup.The man is tactically clueless.He should have gone after the cup final.Instead we have another 3 years at least of this crap.Nothing has changed.WENGER OUT

Not an excuse but obviously flat after the Man City game. Thought chezny did very well. Bellerin set the tone in the first couple of minutes and it was contagious. Arteta hopeless, Ozil non existant and both facial and body expression suggests he is not interested - no enthusiasm at all. Podolski clearly has the craps. Give me Rosicky's enthusiasm every single time.
Bottom line - regardless of tactics (or lack thereof) starting 11 and situation - how does this team, so adept at passing to death suddenly become incapable of putting 2 together. Wenger's biggest problem in my mind is his inability to drive an enthusiastic and confident culture.
That was shite of the highest order. PS Welbeck may well get a hatfull of goals once he gets his first and some confidence.

Ramsey is not yet full-grown(Football wise) . It shows in some decision making and when he tries to show some flashy skill that he hasnt mastered, in dangerous areas. He needs to sit on the bench for a couple of matches. Wilshere is coming up but really doesnt know when to release the ball and thus , will always be one step away from injury or disposession ...
