Football is eating itself
It used to be said that, "Pop will eat itself", now I think that it's Football.
We now have International matches being used by players as self promoting "events."
Take tonight, Rooneys 100th cap, cut to his kids having a kickabout "backstage",(with commentators suggesting their future stardom), then cut to the "WAG", obviously prepared for her close-up,(the WAG that allegedly threw the engagement ring away after stories of his "Granny-Love", but searched for it after doing the sums). Then get a soldier,(who has probably gone through more in week than potato head will ever do), to carry out a GOLDEN cap,(ala Willy Wonka), onto the pitch, while he,(Rooney),makes sure he and his kids are suitably photographed. Add the "tourist" fans recording the entire farce on their phones and I-Pads, and you have the perfect example of todays football

Re: Football is eating itself
yeah, where did this 'golden ' cap bollocks come from ?
bearing in mind that England are woeful and have been for 10 years, to 'celebrate' the number of his appearances is laughable - ONE goal in three world cups is pitiful, and only four in the Euro's - is not much better - basically he's on a goal a tournament.
as another poster said, fuck the FA, UEFA and FIFA its all about money and self promotion nowdays.

Think Rooney missed a trick, with the flat-track bullying he shows for England in friendlies and qualifiers against minnows he would have been perfectly suited to playing for us.

Re: Football is eating itself
it isn't such a great achievement to get 100 caps anymore when you look at the lack of top english talent these days, not to mention that rooney hasn't been world class since 2009. it's an indictment of english football that we have been relying on his services for so long, he has achieved nothing on the international stage.

Re: Football is eating itself
Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend seemed to be in a race to see who would climax quicker over Rooney. On a side note, Andy Townsend is hilarious, the amount of times he wants to say we about England, but has to say them, because he availed of the granny rule, to play for Ireland.
Re: Football is eating itself
The fuss sums up all that ails English Football ,Praising mediocrity, and making celebrities out of morons !
It is an incredible achievement though to rack up 100 international games whilst doing nothing of any note during those games.
I don't hate Rooney, him and his missus have done well for themselves so good luck to him and his contribution to English Football
will be forgotten as its impossible to forget something that never happened in the first place . Or is it ?

That's one of the best descriptions of modern football I've ever read.Rugby Gooner wrote:It used to be said that, "Pop will eat itself", now I think that it's Football.

The game has gone to shit. It's become a pimped up, money-obsessed game where billionaires can just buy trophies for their plaything clubs, populated by braindead multi-millionaire teenagers in pink boots that have achieved fuck all on the pitch to justify their wealth.

I hate Rooney, 100 caps is not such a big deal anymore and since there are a lot more easy games of course he is going to score more.
having said all that if he becomes the leading goalscorer for England he will deserve some credit for that - his longevity at the top level as much anything else is impressive

Re: Football is eating itself
I read an article by Clarke Carlisle a while back in which he describes an incident he witnessed first hand while he was with York City. He played for their reserves in an afternoon game against Newcastle United. Newcastle were managed or coached by Peter Beardsley. After the game the Newcastle players ,who were mainly youth team players, piled onto their luxury coach. Carlisle watched shocked as Peter Beardsley sorted out dirty kit and loaded it onto coach , he said the young players were sitting in the coach on their i.phones or i.pods. I imagine when Peter Beardsley was an apprentice or youth player such things didn't happen. Today's footballer have such a sense of entitlement and detachment from fans and reality that Rugby Gooner's thread title can and possibly will happen.
I cringe when I read that Wayne Rooney is one of England's all time greats , It is an embarrassment to the game that he can be mentioned in the same breath as Bobby Charlton (don't like Charlton but he is due respect) Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks to name a few. Rooney like the ex England man from Anfield are products of the media . They believe in their own special status and their myth far outweighs their ability. They have , or had , ability but not on the scale that the media would have us believe.

Re: Football is eating itself
As I've said before, I have given up going to watch Arsenal after nearly 50 years (just seemed pointless financing a business with no footballing ambitions). To get my football fix I watch non league (Hendon, Ryman Premier).
I can thoroughly recommend it (even as a temporary measure while waiting for our dictator to leave). It is great entertainment, only a tenner, and you soon get used to the standard.
On Saturday when there were no Premier matches we (Hendon) played in the FA Trophy, at home to Worthing. We currently stand 3rd in the League and so was hoping for a reasonable crowd. It was a disappointing 173.
So this is really a plea, if you are disillusioned with the state of Premier League why not give non league a try, there are a few clubs knocking around North London (and beyond) who would welcome you (Wingate And Finchley, Enfield Town, Harrow Borough and of course my beloved Hendon. Please stay away from Wealdstone though, they don't need any new support.)
You might be pleasantly surprised and never look back.
Ok, I'll get off my soap box now. Thanks for reading.

Wasn't the Hive where Barnet have moved to originally being built for Wealdstone or have I imagined reading that somewhere? Are Edgware Town still going? Where do Hendon play now? Can someone teach me how to Google??!!BFG4 wrote:Wealdstone, aren't they were this legend is from?Jon wrote:As I've said before, I have given up going to watch Arsenal after nearly 50 years (just seemed pointless financing a business with no footballing ambitions).
