Previous Arsenal v Man Utd (Highbury / Emirates)
Hmmmm, thought there must already be one of these, but couldn't find one.....
Been to many a clash over the years, starting with a 2-1 defeat I think back in the mid-late 80's, which was only memorable for it all kicking off in the clockend, with Gooners walking round from the North Bank end and just being put in with the mancs !! (pretending they were away fans I guess)
My favourite would be them forming a guard of honour for us back in 1991 when we were crowned Champions after the scousers lost prior to our game.......happy days.
Best goal must be Henry's flick, swivel and volley goal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 7sYSEOm4dE
by the way who did he do the celebration to on the bench ?
Your recollections please

Re: Previous Arsenal v Man Utd (Highbury / Emirates)
The first one I remember going to (barely) was when Frank Stapleton returned in a United shirt and got booed all over the park....must have been '81 or '82. Think it was the first 'big' game my old man ever took me too, and one of those occasions where I got lifted into someone's front garden as Herd and his mates came stampeding down the road
Other happy "I was there" memories were the 2-1 win over them in the Cup in 1988 when Brian McClair's penalty missed my head by inches in the North Bank and the Mancs giving us one of the first 'Guard of Honour' receptions that I can ever remember when we took to the field as champions in 1991. One of the most exciting was Platty sinking that header for the 3-2 win after Teddy Wankpot had been gloating about his brace - what a c u n t that man was / is
Worst memories would be being in the Clock End when that jumped up little prick Lee Sharpe netted a hat trick when they belted us in the League Cup, and sitting in the East Upper in absolute despair watching Average Al go walkabouts when they beat the Invincibles 4-2 at THOF (Rooney being allowed to swear his head off at the ref throughout the entire match and the ladyboy diving all over the pitch)

I was going to mention to the Henry swivel too, what an absolutely wonderful goal.

charlie nicks late winner in the mid eighties, first game of the season, right in front of me at the north bank.

Re: Previous Arsenal v Man Utd (Highbury / Emirates)
Henry's late winner the first season at the Emirates, 2-1 at home when we bossed them in 2008 and being 1st row in Block 14 for Ramsey's winner in 2011 (Not seen much funnier at the football than Ferguson losing the plot at Anderson) are my highlights.
All of those combined will never overcome the abortion that was the first 12 minutes of the 2009 semi-final second leg.

Most horrible memory was the 2-4 that Rooney reffed in 2005. That was the return fixture after the Invincibles defeat, it was an awful night where , as stated above, Shrek done what he wanted all night. Was in the East Lower the following season when Reyes elbowed Rooney in the throat as they chased a ball over towards the touchline. Got a great cheer.. That was the last game between the sides at Highbury.

Some of the good ones have already been mentioned, the Mclair penalty miss remains one of my favourite moments.
The game in 2001 when Barthez made a pigs ear of a clearance allowing Thierry to put us 2-1 up, and then again to allow him to score again. After the first one he gives himself a wedgie in frustration
'Give it to Barthez....'
Not an especially memorable game but there was a 0-0 which was the first game after they had been knocked out the CL, finishing bottom of their group so didnt even go into the UEFA, and the chant from the Clock End was 'you're too shit for channel 5'.

Loved Anelka's goal and Vieira's as well
Cup tie penalty miss was great
Have to recall a very unusual thing that happened - can't remeber the exact year but the bowl years and Gallas scored a last minute goal. A couple of minutes before that a man u player (maybe nani) went down near their goal (time wasting) and Rooney came up to him and pulled him up by his shirt to get on with the game. Then we scored a minute later.
Weird

The only one that stands out for me in the last few years was the hard-fought 2-1 win in November 2008. Two excellent goals from a new signing (name escapes me but I think nowadays it rhymes with "runt") and the team showed the real grit that has been missing for so long. The atmosphere was electric.

The 2008 team was decent, and we were having a good start to the season as well ; think it was also a November fixture?Simon wrote:The only one that stands out for me in the last few years was the hard-fought 2-1 win in November 2008. The 2008 team has since been rebranded as 'team of *word censored*' though :
Gallas
Nasri
Van Persie
Adebayor
etc
Re: Previous Arsenal v Man Utd (Highbury / Emirates)
Possibly the last 3pm Saturday KO at home was the only year I stood on the Clock End : 92/93 - for some reason I always remember the attendance which was 29740, our seaon high due to North Bank being rebuilt.
We lost 1-0, but this was the match whereby the ref failed to add on enough injury time, years later admitting he did this so he did not miss his train out of London that night. Bizarre.

Gallas is debatable.TheCook wrote:The 2008 team has since been rebranded as 'team of *word censored*' though :

Nasri I think we can all agree is such a *word censored* it's untrue.
Ditto Adebayor.
van Persie is a *word censored* for simply signing for Utd.

Re: Previous Arsenal v Man Utd (Highbury / Emirates)
many happy memories - celebrating on the Clock End when forest beat the mousers before kick off THEN going on to win 3-1. which was particularly sweet as the FA Committee was there to present us with the trophy, which we'd won despite their biased two point deduction from us from the Old Trafford Scuffle - singing "you can stick your fucking two points up your arse" at the bunch of suits was priceless.
TH's swivel, platts late winner, keanes double over us from 1-0 down all stand out - as does a game i didn't go to.
on a wet very wednesday night in 1990 i made a last minute decision not to go ( the ticket would have been 3.50 ish) and went to the pub with a mate instead. when i got home slightly lagered at 10.30pm, i found we'd lost 6-2 in the Rumbelows Cup - absolutely mullered by Lee Sharp, Giggs and McClair in what was probably the worst defensive performance under GG.

Re: Previous Arsenal v Man Utd (Highbury / Emirates)
when henry scored with the header in the last minute at the grove
was the first time i left there thinking i was at a home game as people were going mad and the place was bouncing. bergkamp in the one nil 1996 i think and we were sat in the northbank when andy cole scored, bunch of mancs jumped up, goal disallowed and they got thrown out before they got the shit kicked out of them by a lot of angry gooners sat close by
