Previous Arsenal v Villa matches (Highbury / Emirates)

Post by StuartL »

A team we have played many many times over the years, usually with some success - although the 3-1 opening day defeat last seasonprompted the " you don't know what your doing" and "spend some fucking money" chants at Wenker.

Goals from a 3-0 win a couple of years ago including a nice take and slot home from Theo.

A great comeback form 2-0 down including a Merson goal, to win 3-2, with Henry sealing it in the last minute :)

Perhaps the most memorable match for me was a 5-0 win during George's reign, back in 1989 I guess, when due to a goalkeeper injury a certain David Platt went in goal for Villa but was wearing an Arsenal keepers jersey and got chants of "you'll never play for Arsenal"

Wasn't there but back in 1981, Villa won the league at Highbury, despite us beating them 2-0 as Ipswich lost 2-1 after being a goal up !

Any memories of game gone by you would care to share ?

that game was my only time in 27 years going to Highbury that i went into the West Stand.

to give younger gooners a sense of the time - Pele was on the pitch at Halftime and Atari were the Programme sponsors.

i don't remember much of the game - we played well i think, Ipswich had already lost i remember. There was tons of AG AG AGGRO in the lower west and clockend as our casuals were hopping over the fences lamping villa fans and then running back to cheers and applause.

both sets of fans invaded the pitch after the game, preventing villa and us doing a lap of honour.

on the tube home the Villa fans were in disbelief - i think Ipswich had led them in the closing stages.

Another game that stands out was a mid week match around 87-88 ish and the Clock End was stupidly loud and taunting Villa fans when we were 1 up with the "Villa Run from The Arsenal" song. It was one of those loverly warm nights at THOF where the lights and turf were blindingly bright and everyone was in a good mood before the game.

I will always grieve for Highbury. Always.

This free kick from Arteta in that same 3-0 I believe.

Tbf it's a stunning hit but still hilarious given how many times he'd failed to clear the wall on free kicks that year.

A few world class goals from Henry and Van Persie - also Diaby's first, 9 years on he's still going strong.

Winning 2-0 in the unbeaten season, winning again to make it 49, a terrible 0-0 Boxing day game in 1994, losing 2-1 to them in 1993-94 when the clock end was being refurbished, Suker scoring against them after David James had held onto the ball for too long and given away an indirect free kick inside the box, the first game at the new ground and then an awful 2-0 defeat in cold, damp weather in 2008, I think. They are a strange side for us because we seem to either thrash them or lose.

Was on the North Bank in May 1999 when we beat them 1-0 but Spuds threw in the towel in Old Trafford so Manure finished the day and season as champions. Kanu scored late for us , Diawara came on as a sub and i think Petit finished the game at left back.
We got early hope when Ginola (I think) put Spuds 1-0 up at the Theatre Of Merchandise. The feeling that the title had gone had begun the previous Tuesday when we lost 0-1 at Leeds. Dreadful gutted feeling leaving the ground that day.
We lost out on retaining the title by one point , but in that season we were 2-0 up at Villa in the away game and fucked it up. We were beaten at Sheffield Wednesday on the Di Canio v Ref Alcock day, but we had Keown incorrectly sent off which was later rescinded. Lost 1-0 to late goal, 10 v 10 on the pitch , would we have lost if it were11 v 10 as it should have been ?..We conceded a goal at Filbert Street to Heskey who had come back onto the pitch after treatment without the ref's permission . Small margins denied us the title that season..
God I am sounding like a Scouser here

There was a time when it seemed our away results v Villa were better than our home ones.

the petrovic goal in the cup quarter final 82-83 is my enduring memory of highbury villa matches. the platt game was 1991, campbell scored a couple as did paul davis. a very good fixture for us down the years, although the emirates is a totally different ground for them. they seem to either have their match of the season or just turn up already beaten.

hope we smash them and the whiny brummie rendition of "have yow ever won the yowrowpean cap" is drowned out by "going down going down" etc 8)
