As one of the few that have defended Giroud on here, I too thought he was poor technically on Saturday. His touch was off and he seemed to break down our attack too often with leaden feet. But he scored a vital goal so that's something. He also still showed for every stupid pointless ball lobbed up at him and he still wins most of them. The problem is most of those won balls are then knocked down to no one. He also simply does not have the pace to play that lone striker role any other way but with his back to goal mostly.

I like his work ethic, the fact he challenges for every header and wins the vast majority, I like that he has the odd spectacular goal in him, but ultimately he is not a top top class striker. But I still maintain that a pragmatic manager would get more from him in a 4-4-2 as he usually has a decent touch in the box and does usually link up quite well.

The issue we have is that nobody else in the squad can play the role effectively and whilst I still maintain he's a bit of a lump at times, he is undoubtedly missed when he's not there. Welbeck can't play that back to goal role, and Sanchez (for all his qualities) has been far less effective when played there IMO. All the while he blocks any progress from Sanogoals is also an added bonus - perhaps we can persuade Palace to have him permanently
