Qatar 2022
So it's official then, Blatter and his merry men have decided that it's a teeny weeny bit warm in the summer over there and so it's now gonna be played sometime in the winter.
Presumably this will mean that the Premier League will be suspended for 6 weeks and extended in the summer of 2023. But hang on, this will mean a late start to the 2023/24 season which means......

Re: Qatar 2022
the Premier League is so powerful now that they should just continue as normal.
then watch the clubs refuse to release their players for the World Cup.
if it does all go ahead then expect 2020/21 to finish in April, 2021/22 to start in July and for 2022/23 to start in September.
knock on effects for one stupid tournament will be felt over 3 seasons - also the 2022 xmas programme will be cancelled.
Fuck off FIFA

Re: Qatar 2022
If the UEFA nations pulled out of this World Cup and opted to stage their own tournament in the summer instead the rest of the world would soon follow.
I still expect that to happen, I simply cannot see it going ahead in the winter with all the disruption it will cause.

Re: Qatar 2022
the bigger problem actually is Russia 2018 - there must be an even bigger case for boycotting that tournament
Re: Qatar 2022
If the clubs pull their players out of the tournament, fifa will suspend those clubs so the clubs wont push the envelope that far imo. Tbh the european leagues dont have enough numbers to force a change here in the same way as they dont appear to have enough numbers to oust a supposedly crooked president

Re: Qatar 2022
Fuck this shit, fuck it.
I won’t watch/listen to a minute of this piece of shit. Qatar? QATAR? Why not give it to Vatican City, or San Marino?
Estimates put the total number of deaths (of indentured servants too) at some 4000 by the time it’s complete. I‘ll pass.

I'd rather not have a tournament dominated by UEFA, one good thing that FIFA have done is spread the World Cup around the world. Ok they clearly could've picked better nations than Russia and Qatar, but bringing the tournament to Africa was a good thing IMO. It shouldn't just be about Europe and South America.
I wouldn't mind a shorter season in one of the seasons leading up to it, the football season is too long as it is.

Re: Qatar 2022
It's one thing sharing it around, but it's another voting for a non sensical option, then changing the premise of what was voted on and therefore disrupting a huge amount of traditional fixture lists. If they wanted to expand to other areas Australia also pitched for this world cup.Mistical92 wrote:I'd rather not have a tournament dominated by UEFA, one good thing that FIFA have done is spread the World Cup around the world. This vote should be deemed invalid and a new vote take place. The countries that voted for Qatar voted for a summer world cup and presumably thought it was the best option based on the criteria set out (ahem). Would they still vote for it if they knew it would change dates?

Re: Qatar 2022
Too true; South Africa now has several beautiful white elephants that it wouldn't have had if FIFA hadn't showed up and hooved billions of rand out of the local and national economies.Mistical92 wrote:I'd rather not have a tournament dominated by UEFA, one good thing that FIFA have done is spread the World Cup around the world. Re: Qatar 2022
The world cup last summer in Brazil will be the last of its kind.
And the way the game is changing can you imagine how grotesque it will be 7 years from now regardless of this Qatar farce ?

Re: Qatar 2022
Its great having a world cup in the middle east but I believe this world cup has to be re-voted for because of 3 reasons;
1) all bids were put in for a summer world cup. If you submit for a summer you can't just move it to the winter. Other middle eastern countries who have a passionate football following may well have put a bid in had they known the tournament could be moved to the winter.
2) they will not leave a legacy in Qatar. Once completed the stadia will be taken down and prospectively moved to developing nations.
3) if Israel qualify they would be banned from the country as Qatar does not allow Jewish nationals in their country. This would contravene FIFA's all inclusive policy and ethics( a term used loosely when associated with FIFA).

I agree that there needs to be a revote, because it's clearly not going to be what was advertised. I'm not bothered if it's in the winter though. There's no reason why it should always be in the European summer, tradition isn't the be all and end all, things should be flexible.Skooner wrote:It's one thing sharing it around, but it's another voting for a non sensical option, then changing the premise of what was voted on and therefore disrupting a huge amount of traditional fixture lists. You should be. UEFA's money league will continue as normal but all European leagues that follow the English model will be thrown out of kilter for years.Mistical92 wrote:I agree that there needs to be a revote, because it's clearly not going to be what was advertised. All so FIFA's goons can collect yet more untold billions off the backs of the poor. If the vote explicitly stated that 2022 would be a winter tournament then I'd say suck it up. They didn't though, did they?
Re: Qatar 2022
I agree with you mate but once the football season is moved to the summer for this it will probably stay there.officepest wrote:You should be. That's how change gets phased in. Its made to look like a one-off at first so that people accept it; then suddenly its hailed as a success by the powers that be and it stays that way. Classic example being the FA Cup semi's being held at Wembley and the final being held before the last league game.

basically Platini wants to see summer football like he wanted to see the Champions League final played on a Saturday night.
he got his way with that and he will probably get his way over this too.
already this season in case you havent noticed the CL final is being played on June 6th!!
