Monaco at home

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

We all loved Highbury, but come on, staying there would've been stupid. We have too many fans for a ground under 40,000, probably even 60,000 if the prices were sensible. The tickets would be even dearer if we were still at Highbury and it would be impossible to get tickets.

bullshit.

Liverpool manage okay, won the CL too didn't they ? it hasn't held them back.

as to 'impossible to get tickets' - not for the 22,000 ST holders who were with the club through thick and thin. At Highbury we had a large percentage of the crowd who were long term loyal fans, what do we have now ? - JCLs and tourists outnumbering everyone else, and thousands of empty seats nearly every game.

and we now pay the highest ticket prices in world football "to pay for the stadium"....

leaving Highbury was the worst thing we ever did.

Liverpool cope, but I bet they have loads of fans who are unable to get tickets because of the size of their ground.

If you were a season ticket holder at Highbury it's easy to say 'we don't need to move', your place at every game is ensured. However, for those of us who weren't STHs it was much harder to actually go and support the team. IMO as many fans should be able to go to support the team as possible, 20,000 more Gooners get to actually see their team! Sure the prices are awful, but that shouldn't be an argument against moving to the Emirates. In an ideal world the prices would be cheaper, but we don't live in an ideal world.

We should have blackmailed the local council , threatened to leave the area . Take away their council tax income , and put in plans for another North Bank on the clock end . For a fraction of the expense of The "Emirates " how I hate that name , we could have gone from a 38000 capacity to nearly 50000 . The gym and other things behind the stand could have been relocated . We should have said come across with the permission or we are off.

So we're going to blame the emirates move on our lack of progress.

You seriously think had we stayed at highbury wenger wouldn't have become and arrogant egomaniac.

We would have won a few more trophies but they would have dried up and then we'd be looking to replace the manager and try and gain investment to build a new stadium.

You're just romanticizing highbury now. Emirates is an excuse for Arsene and his fans and I'm sure had we not moved there would be other excuses to use.

The move may not have directly caused our present malaise but it certainly impacted on our ability to improve the team . For many people when we moved part of the club died , it has yet to re-incarnate.

The board (Lazy Greedy bunch of over fed *word censored*.ts)
The Mananger (less said the better)

The club looked at every possible option to expand Highbury.
Even with a Northbank style stand at the Clock End, plus putting some seats in the corners between stands, the maximum they could get it to was 45,000.

Yes, there are more tourists now than 10 years ago.
But things were heading that way anyway, it is how society, and London, and football have changed in general.
I bet a fair few of these tourists actually live in London, the demographics have radically changed since 1997.
The Premier League has grown overseas since then too.
But it is also mixed with the club deliberately targeting overseas fans through travel and ticket schemes.

Whilst it was clear to me that Monaco were not going to be the pushovers that some people seem to assume, the performance was totally unacceptable, missing easy chances and comic book defending. as far as I am concerned the Buck ends with our vastly overpaid Manager. :banghead: :cussing:

I hate the way our full backs bombing forward like idiots. Wenger is always arragont, overconfident in our ability and under estimates opposition without coming with proper game plan. There is no reason for Gibbs (worst full back) and hector to start the game instead of Nacho and chambers who are more disciplined.

Once it was seated the clock end held 6000, the North Bank 12500 , that's 6500 extra 1000 in each corner would have bought it to just over 48000. However there would have been no diamond club , but I am sure they could have got over that little hurdle.

the emirates has allowed wenger the excuse to underperform for nine years.

without that excuse he would have been gone by 2010 easily.

he's getting so much flak in the press today because the money has been spent and we are worse than ever.

without the stadium excuse he would of had nowhere to hide (like now) much much sooner.

leaving Highbury and building a new stadium was a stupid stupid idea - it tore the heart out of our support, marginalized it and gave wenger the perfect excuse for mediocrity.

has anybody ever mentioned the other massive reason Wenker wanted a bigger stadium??? do you think he'd be on 8m year if we were still at 38,000 cap highbury

People keep saying that having a large stadium is fundamental for a team challenging for trophies, but if anything Arsene FC should be living proof that it is a bullshit myth  Having a good manager is key. Having good players is key. Having good players and a 60k stadium means fcuk all if they are under the managership of a gimp, but having a good manager building a team in a 38k capacity stadium is priceless
