England footballer arrested for alleged under-age sex

BBC radio just reported that a 27 year-old England player has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with an under-age girl. Did some digging and it's reported in the Sun and the Indy:

Article mentions Durham Police so I'm assuming it is somebody on either Newcastle or Sunderland's books, but could be wrong.

Yep. Assuming he's innocent it will still take a while for the investigation to run, and he'll be suspended until then.

Didnt know she was only 14 at the time, where did you see that? Mind (and not just trying to blindly defend him) if he was in a club a 14 year old could still easily look 16, be interesting to see what happens

For obvious reasons details are sketchy, but I initially heard it reported (Indy link above) that she was indeed 14.

I'm far from a police basher but it's a disgrace that this has been leaked/given to the press. Just shouldn't happen before a person is charged.

Depends on the facts but if it was in a club (for example) and he genuinely didn't know she was under 16 then he's certainly not guilty of rape and presumably no sexual offences.

Cheating is wrong IMO, but when it comes to a professional sportsman, it is beyond idiotic, because it can lead to massive repercussions. I'm going to try and believe that Johnson didn't know the girl was underage, but another example of the stupidity of footballers, who keep getting themselves in awkward situations.
