Scholes was critical of the midfielder saying that he has underperformed since his transfer and that he often looks disinterested, although he added that Özil has been hampered by the lack of leadership on the pitch.

“Over the years, the big players who were really ambitious – [Patrick] Vieira, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fàbregas, Robin van Persie – have all left,” wrote Scholes in the Independent. “They left for the simple reason that Arsenal are not in it to win league titles any more.

“Those players have realised that if they want to win championships then they have to move elsewhere. It’s why I think Mesut Özil took the easy option joining Arsenal. Since he has been there you cannot doubt his quality but at times he looks like he is going through the motions, however much ground he covers.”

“He needs a leader around him to get him going. At Real Madrid he had a chance of winning league titles. At Arsenal that is not on the cards.”

In his Friday press conference, the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger responded to Scholes’ claims by saying that “Scholes would have loved to have played with a player like Mesut Özil.” Wenger added: “[Özil] has the quality and he works a lot harder than his style of play shows.”

Poor Scholes. Can't critique Wenker's management as he "hasn't managed a single game in his life".
But surely this one takes the biscuit - Scholes would have "loved" to play with Mesut
Poor ol Scholes, having to play with Ronaldo, Beckham, Giggs, Van Nistelrooy and Rooney etc...

I'm happy to bash Wenger; but I don't see what's untrue with this statement. Fergalnose would have had the bollocks to demand more, and get more, from Özil.

Well by giving that answer Wenger is effectively proving Scholes' point. :rubchin:

another stat here for you

Arsenal FC 1931-1991 10 League titles (one every 6 years)
Arsene FC 1996-2015 3 League titles (one every 6.3 years)

all the nonsense about Wenger being our greatest manager is rubbish.
he was ok for a few years but if you look at his record overall it is no better than the club has ever done!!

OK for a few years

He achieved great things at first, for whatever reason, think youve been drinking what Augie drinks Rob

Crewe Alexandra? wtf :box:

He is and always has been good, just not good enough for a lonng time.

Overall Herbert was surely the greatest manager, but we have been fortunate to have had a number of very good ones, Mee GG AW all achieved a lot at points of their tenure, despite football only being invented 23 years ago.

Gabriel had no known serious muscular injuries all that time at Villarreal then 1 month under Wenger's training regime and he already has a dodgy hamstring.

Not to be overly pedantic, but a hamstring is a tendon not a muscle.

It wasnt me who mentioned Crewe Alexandra. no idea why someone wrote that

I am still not convinced that Wenger was a great manager in his early years though - he took 5 seasons to get above 80 points for a season. For the 3 seasons after he won the first double we won nothing. United still dominated the best of the Wenger era and then Chelsea quickly overtook us after the premature break up of the invincibles. Wenger was good 1996-04 but not a great deal better than GG

Scholes comments on Ozil will get all the headlines but it is what he also says which is the more damning of Wenger and Arsenal.

"Over the years, the big players who were really ambitious – [Patrick] Vieira, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fàbregas, Robin van Persie – have all left,” wrote Scholes in the Independent. “They left for the simple reason that Arsenal are not in it to win league titles any more."

those comments are spot on and it is about time that everyone realised that

Not to be overly pedantic, but a hamstring is a tendon not a muscle.
But what is a hamstring? It isn't actually a single ''string.'' It's a group of three muscles that run along the back of your thigh. They allow you to bend your leg at the knee.
http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/hamstring-strain
The hamstrings are a collection of three muscles located in the back of the thigh that are responsible for bending or flexing the knee. The semitendinosus, the semimembranosus, and the biceps femoris begin as a tendon that inserts in the ischium, one of the pelvic bones, and run the length of the femur, crossing the back of the knee to attach to the tibia and fibula. A small portion of the hamstring muscle also spans across the hip joint and is involved in hip extension. The hamstring muscle fibers gradually become tendon fibers near the knee to attach to bone. One can appreciate the thick tendon bands when feeling behind the knee joint.
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/pulled_h ... cle_em.htm
Hamstring muscle injuries — such as a "pulled hamstring" — occur frequently in athletes. They are especially common in athletes who participate in sports that require sprinting, such as track, soccer, and basketball.

A pulled hamstring or strain is an injury to one or more of the muscles at the back of the thigh. Most hamstring injuries respond well to simple, nonsurgical treatments.
http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00408

The hamstrings are the tendons that attach the large muscles at the back of the thigh to bone. The hamstring muscles are the large muscles that pull on the tendons. The hamstring muscles turn into tendons as they come down and attach at the back of the knee. So yes, it is possible to have a hamstring muscular injury.

These players come here and develop serious injuries that they never had previously. Wenger and his training methods being the common denominator.

I Didnt say he was a great manager, but for whatever reasons (Which Augie has identified well) managed great achievements. Invincibles doubles, nothing to be sniffed at. Agree with all here who correctly point out we underperformed in the CL especially with the invincibles

GG Mee and chapman all similarly achieved great things.

Think hes always been a good manager, above average, which is why the last few years have been so painful, continuously getting into the cl, yet just not doing enough to actually win anything at all  , with a number of woeful predictable results. Many (AKBs) just cant accept that a manager who achieved great things is actually, looking carefully, a jammy bugger who should have seized the chance to go in glory rather than meander along pissing increasing fans off whilst trousering ££££££ per year.

Oh and Wenger out, ideally after we win the FA cup this year to go with the league title

I have been accused of being Peter Hill-Wood, and now I am accused of being The Swiss Rambler.

Might they all be the same person?

Both have had city careers.
Both know an awful lot about Arsenal finances.
Neither has been seen in the same place at the same time.
I wonder if Swiss Rambler also sits at home slurring racist gibberish at his butler with port all over his shirt sitting in a piss-soaked grand armchair.
