As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Agree with Augie. Good keeper Cech is but, as usual, we are now being told by many Gooners that he is better than De Gea, better than Courtois (the keeper Chelski kept, and won the league with) and better than Lloris
I mean, Jesus...
I also agree that it isn't a huge coup to sign Cech at 33 when he's the Chelski reserve keeper. If we'd signed him back in 2007 then...
Augie, I am not questioning Courtois ability, I am just saying that they are very much level ability wise. Courtois was put back in because he had time to get over his blip, it still didn't stop him making errors like Charlie Adams goal when he was pretty much next to him when he shot, or the goals conceded at Hull for instance. He's young, that happens. Chelsea have made the decision to go with the younger man who is already a brilliant 'Keeper. We would be doing the same if we had a young 'Keeper at that level. Cech is still excellent.
The 'unopposed' comment is rather redundant. PSG were in for him, and he didn't want to go there. He's been pretty firm about where he wanted to go, and Arsenal have got it done.
personally I think courtois and cech are on a par but its a no brainer that courtois was the chavs number one purely because he could have 15 years at the top whereas cech has probably 8 max,you wouldn't let the younger man leave would you, that is why courtois was number one to stop him leaving not because hes better than cech
Gooners will remember Pat Jennings transfer age 32, who continued at top form for 7 or 8 years. Cech is one year older, so we should expect to get at least 5 years from him IMHO. Mores the point he will be an asset within the squad I am sure with all his experience.
Seaman went on till 40, Mad Jens to 39 perhaps a year or two too long ( )
If Coutois wasnt at The Chavs they would surely never have sold him He is still one of the best keepers in the game- better by a mile than Casillas

Amount of games players play nowadays and severe physical demands placed on them, is hugely different than it was in big pat's era so it isn't the same situation imo
Man Utd signed Van Der Sar when he was 34, it was for 2 million I grant you that but he went on and proved to be huge asset in the trophies won for the four years after that.
Cech is a huge upgrade to what we had and his presence in the dressing room should start to help the already turning loser mentality into a winners one.
Who knows Chez might become the world star we want after four years under Cech's wing
Sorry pal but you're on drugs if you're telling me Cech is better than Courtois
I reckon Jose knows a thing or two, and having Courtois as number 1 won them the league! Cech isn't as good as him, it's obvious.
If you remember, Jose as you call him, dropped Courtois for Cech when he started making errors around Christmas. Cech came in and was brilliant as usual. It's why Terry and 'Jose' said he was worth 12 points. Courtois will be a superb Goalkeeper, he is now but had he not had a year left on his contract before last summer, he wouldn't have been there No.1
e Gea and Lloris as SteveO mentioned, are also superior keepers.
De Gea a good shot stopper, Lloris a good Sweeper Keeper, but I would argue all round game Cech trumps them both.
I'm just pleased we've finally signed a keeper worthy of the name.
Couldn't give a shit if he's chavs reserve keeper, we paid too much or if he's second third or fourth best keeper in prem
He is class....great signing.
Cech has a tremendous pedigree and is still a top-drawer goalkeeper, on par with Lloris and behind only De Gea and obviously Courtois.
Yes, he is old (some would say we have him for his peak years) and yes, the fee was stupid but I don't care; we've been wilfully neglectful of this position for fucking years and we have finally got someone who won't induce cardiac arrest as soon as the ball goes into our box.
I'd take Cech over the error-prone Begovic any day and he's twice the player Szczesny will ever be, so I can't really think of many other better, and realistic, options.
Plus, it must have pissed off Mourinho no end too.

And that is my point - I guess that you can argue that needs influence price but I still believe that we overpaid for a 33 year old and especially one that hasn't been the same since he fractured his skull. If le cock had of already signed a top quality DM and a top quality striker and still had 11m in the coffers to buy cech then maybe I would be ok with the price, but the reality is that we wont spend the necessary money on all 3 positions and the keepers position should be 3rd on a priority list imo
WTF, Big Pat played more games per season in the old league when there were more teams in it, as well as endless FA cup replays, and the "Home Internulls" too so he must have played many more, though perhaps a few less in Europe with the CL stuff nowadays .
Sure the goalies now run around more, but given the increased back passes then I would suspect that Big Pat probably played about as much Physically as Cech will, and though goalies werent being assaulted as in the 50s at least players got to actually touch and push goalies a lot more then.
Van De Sar was 10 years ago, in which time transfer fees have shot up overall.
Would prefer 10m on Cech than 16m on Chambers or Danny, we know whos likely to give the best value out of those 3 surely

If we bought Messi he would, by definition, be a Barca castoff, so presumably many on here would moan about his signing.
More generalisations from both of you - would we have been able to purchase cech 2 or 3 years ago ? If not why not ? Reality states that he would not have left the chavs to sign for us and they would not have allowed him to leave if they didn't have courtois, and if either of you dispute that then it's time you for you to be sent to the funny farm.
Compare this situation to that of cesc and rvp - in both cases our club did not want them to go but both barca and manure unsettled them enough and waved enough money, to get their men. When was the last time we did that with a big club/rival ? Nobody expects us to prise away a "messi" type player from their club, but likewise it should be acknowledged that we don't use our muscle enough in the transfer market

the only generalisations i made augie was that some on this forum are never happy, we needed a keeper and we went and got one, and a bloody good one at that.
