Re: The 2015 Transfer Rumours Thread
Cech is an improvement on other keepers that we have.
The estimated fee of £11M does not bother me, we can afford it.
The signing is tinged with regret for me.
I think Szczesny is OK but nothing more at this point, far from the finished article and there are a few personality questions popping up about him...his personal discipline and smoking etc.
So Cech's arrival could well mean the departure of Ospina.
A player who is not a top notch keeper but is a very good one, who appeared to give the other players confidence with his assured demeanour and maturity compared to Szczesny.
Whose inclusion as a regular in the team, co-incided with Coquelin's, and no coincidence, a good second half to the season.
I really hope we can keep Ospina and let Szczesny go.
Here was Ospina's excellent double save against Argentina -

I'm content with the signing if Cech. It's an upgrade on what we already have. It's not as if there is a plethora of experienced goalkeeping talent available. I doubt even if we bid £30m for De Gea that he would come to us.
Cech might be classed as the chavs reserve keeper but, in my opinion, he can teach our young smoking upstart keeper some respect and responsibility. He might then make the grade after playing second fiddle for 3-4 seasons.
Welcome to the library Petr.

Exactly - The 79/80 season in particular, 70 competitive games, still a record I believe. I looked it up and Brian Talbot played every game, and was only substituted off twice, astonishing.Theoperator wrote:WTF, Big Pat played more games per season in the old league when there were more teams in it, as well as endless FA cup replays, and the "Home Internulls" tooso he must have played many more, though perhaps a few less in Europe with the CL stuff nowadays

Talbot collapsed from exhaustion in the dressing room after the last game away to Middlesborough , did he go on a holiday ? like fuck he did, instead he went to Australia with England B.remigardeshair wrote:Exactly - The 79/80 season in particular, 70 competitive games, still a record I believe. Off topic but Arsenal played third FA Cup semi-final replay on a Thursday. Coventry away the Saturday, Forest home on the Monday, FA Cup Final the following Saturday, European Cup Winners Cup Final in Brussels on the Wednesday, (extra time and penalties defeat) , Wolves away on the Friday (two days later) and Middlesborough away on the Monday. Missed out on UEFA Cup qualification..in addition to that on Easter Monday we played at the Swamp and two days later played Juventus at Highbury.

According to Marca journalist @marcoslopez, William Carvalho is a priority transfer target for #Arsenal.

If we bought Messi he would, by definition, be a Barca castoff, so presumably many on here would moan about his signing.
More generalisations from both of you - would we have been able to purchase cech 2 or 3 years ago ? If not why not ? Reality states that he would not have left the chavs to sign for us and they would not have allowed him to leave if they didn't have courtois, and if either of you dispute that then it's time you for you to be sent to the funny farm.
Compare this situation to that of cesc and rvp - in both cases our club did not want them to go but both barca and manure unsettled them enough and waved enough money, to get their men. When was the last time we did that with a big club/rival ? Nobody expects us to prise away a "messi" type player from their club, but likewise it should be acknowledged that we don't use our muscle enough in the transfer market
Agreed, but it's not quite so straightforward. Cech was under contract and Mourinho made it clear that he didn't want Cech to leave and especially to a rival. It's not like we've prized Messi from Barca, but Cech's a very good player, bought at a good price, against the wishes of his manager and will definitely improve our team, so why are so many posters so negative about it?
Our 'muscle' can only realistically be used with teams below us in the pecking order. We're deluded if we think we can prise top players from Barca, Madrid, Múnich, Manure, Chelsea, Citeh, PSG etc. Either because of playing success or money (or both) they are more attractive to the vast majority of players. I wish it wasn't so, but until we start winning the PL or the CL or a Usmanov-type squillionaire takes over and splashes the cash it's how it's going to be.
Re: The 2015 Transfer Rumours Thread
But prior to the shrek 250k per wage contract, we were paying as much as manure were so why couldn't we poach any of their players ? For me it boils down to a total inability to convince anyone (including us Gooners) that the club have real serious ambitions and are willing to do what is necessary to make us a superpower - we as a club have a manager and ceo that talk the talk but will never walk the walk and back up their words with real actions

Are there that many posters negative about Cech? I've been reading this thread off and on and there's some negative comments from one poster in particular but other than that all seems pretty positive.GranadaJoe wrote:

There's at least four posters who have made negative comments about the signing of a world class keeper.

When you say that, are you suggesting that those people are against the signing of cech ? I have consistently said that I feel that cech is an upgrade on what we have and that his experience could be a big plus for us, but I also said that I think that the price was too steep for a player of his age, so does that mean I am opposed to signing him ? Is this a case, as I suggested previously, that a fan has to be 100% in agreement with every detail of this deal or else he will be viewed as being opposed to it ?

Yes, you said you wouldn't sign him if the the fee was above £10m.augie wrote:GranadaJoe wrote:arseofacrow wrote:Are there that many posters negative about Cech? The fee was above that, so you're against the signing.
Simple really
