I hate this attitude on Arteta. Do you even hear the stories of what he did before the Cup final last year? How he showed what it mean to wear the shirt in a cup final. You need players around a club who can be leaders and also offer advice to the young lads etc. We got rid of our older players too early a few years ago and the team was weaker for it, maybe Wenger has learnt the value of keeping some older heads like Rosicky and Arteta around.

Waste of money is also ridiculous, we're bloody rolling in it. He's hardly on astronomical wages compared to others.
I heard the story and while I think it's a nice one It's what I expect from my manager.

We have enough players in the squad that can be leaders now, we've just signed one infact, the problem I have is that he showed last year before injury that he couldn't cut it anymore and since injury he's struggled to get fit which says his body struggles to cope as he's not getting any younger.

If they want to keep him around make him a coach, get him some pom poms, give him a tray of oranges or buy him an outfit so he can double up with Gunnersaurus but we shouldn't be keeping him around on a decent wage unless he's capable of competing for a spot in the team and with his contribution being more than writing the programme notes.

If he's on a contract than fair enough, he might aswel see it out but to give him a new one is mind boggling, I guess with Diaby going we need a replacement for the 'he will be like a new player' in Jan when he is due to come back from another injury and to help dodge buying a competitor for that position.

Right now all we are doing is paying him a wage to do his coaching badges and write the programme notes, we need more.

Edit. He must be on between 60-80k a week, add Diaby and Flamini wages and it goes towards a very good player which is why I regard this new deal as pure waste when he will struggle to get on to the pitch for one reason or another, we already pay someone 8m a year for his experience off the pitch, we have several players with more top level experience now which dwarfs Arteta's experience at Rangers, Barcelona youths, PSG and Everton.

I agree with this to a point - arteta gets far too much stick from Arsenal fans imo and I am more than happy to retain him at the club for the cups etc. the problem is though, that wenker will see his staying as a reason not to buy a schnederlein/carvalho/schweinstiger and we can't afford that imo. I would also dispute the notion that we have enough leaders in the squad without arteta - history tells me that, while we have experienced players, very few are capable of standing up as leaders

Unless Wenger reacts to another gift you may aswel accept that this is it.
That wasn't the believe it or not question though.

Augie believes the story that wenger needs preseason training/friendlies to decide what he needs.

I don't believe this as what will he learn in preseason that 9 months of competitive football didn't tell him?

It's surely a non-story.

You say that like it would be the first time it has happened - didn't he say something similar himself a few summers ago ?
What Wenger says and what he thinks away from the cameras are very different things. You shouldn't take his word at face value.

That's why he signed Cech despite praising his "3 world class goalkeepers" not so long back. He's always kept his true thoughts private.

Instead, consider whether it's logical or not.

What could he possibly learn from early pre-season training and the odd friendly in Singapore that 9 months of competitive football hasn't already told him?

He gathered the troops up, showed them some old Arsenal Cup Final footage and gave them all a pep talk, admirable I will give him that but in my opinion the manager should have that side of it covered regardless onf if the captain chooses to do the same.

Cech, Sanchez and Ozil are all World Class players that became available and he reacted because they were too good an opportunity to pass up.

That's not him being proactive to fix his problems (Cech aside although he just bought a keeper last year which to me confirms that Cech was opportunistic as opposed to planned) that's him being reactive, most of us are desperate for a DM or a proper WC striker to join but if someone amazing became available who we don't really need (for arguments sake lets say Sterling although hes not amazing) fell into his lap you know he would do the deal while ignoring what needs to be addressed.

That's a little off topic from what Augie and I are discussing but I agree with what you say. Absolutely.

I suppose the obvious end to that sentence would be: "and... it's only July 7th and the window closes at the end of August".

I get people are frustrated and irritable at not having signed a few top players yet (like fans of most other teams I suppose) but it still feels way too early to be getting this angry about it when we all know most deals around Europe are yet to happen.

Cech signed about a week ago so it's not as if we've been waiting that long since our last transfer fix so... erm... chill 8)

Not a fan of Cech then? :(

Have to say I'm delighted we've signed him. I have very little confidence in Chesney and Ospina so I'm really hoping Cech proves to be an upgrade 8) - if he is, it'll be huge progress as we've been looking for a proper keeper for years!

I think you are (deliberately) missing my point. These these threads are barking. Cech was a good signing and we've kept Arteta. 50 pages later zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
