Agreed, these people disturb me. They revel in taking away life and I just find it sick.

I did read an interesting article though. They basically said that although it's difficult for most people to understand why people would want to kill a lion, elephant, tiger, etc. the very fact that they pay crazy high prices to do so (the dentist paid £35k apparently) actually protects lions from being exterminated as pests by local people who would, if not for the high price for hunters, have little reason to keep these animals alive.

No idea if that's true or not, but thought it was interesting.

Obviously it appears that Cecil the lion was lured away from a national park, so the above doesn't really apply to him.

I'm a bit torn on this issue. I'm a shooter but I only target shoot in a controlled environment at a gun club as my old man taught me you should never shoot any animal you are not going to eat. He used to hunt wild boar for meat with a Butcher mate of his in the Aussie outback in the 70's and he loved hunting, but justified it because the animal was killed quickly and used for food.

So whilst I abhor hunting for recreation or "sport" purposes, I wouldn't condemn hunting par se.

If you wish to shoot for sport then what’s wrong with target or clay pigeon shooting? If you aren’t going to eat the animal you kill and you shoot it ‘for fun’ then you are, in fact, a *word censored*.

Plus, in this case, the animal was lured away from its reservation only to be wounded by an arrow and tracked for days before it was killed, skinned and decapitated. It’s a throwback to 1850.
