Bit unfair, hes in the French U21s and captained them, and represented France in the U16 17 19 and 20s before we "signed" him- on a free incidentally. Sure theres wages to pay.

I don't think it was the inevitability you make out. In any case his wages were paid by Palace at the end of last season and Ajax now. He may well never make it, time will tell. Strange to see one De Boer selecting playing and signing him on loan and the other saying hes crap.
It's not the wages that are the problem. Not nice to see us piss money up the wall but it's peanuts in the grand scheme of things. The problem is when he's starting CL knock-out games against Bayern Munich and turning out at Wembley for us 3 times in 5 months. Costing us on the pitch and just another excuse for Wenger not to sign a striker.

He had scored 1 goal in top-flight French football and had already suffered a chequered injury record. There were literally thousands of better strikers we could have signed. He would struggle to get off most Championship side's bench, he has no redeeming features whatsoever. Completely fucking inexplicably useless.

The best way I can put it is that the Sanogo signing was one that came with huge risk, as he was the only striker we signed that window, and regardless of his appearances underage for France, he hadn't done enough for us to be signing him. It was a signing that suited Wenger as Sanogo came on a free. It's ridiculous that Wenger persists with these vanity projects, instead of making proper signings.

@BFG4- yes yes we all agree it was a massive risk, we had effectively 3 strikers, Giroud bendy and Sanogo that season  , we all agree, same with him starting V Bayern, though in fairness, he seemed to actually cause the opposition problems when he played in the FA cup matches.

@NB123, WTF did you get one goal score from  look at Wiki, actually the stats are better than I realised

2009–2012
Auxerre B 31 (15)

2010–2013
Auxerre 21 (11)

2013–
Arsenal 11 (0)

2015
→ Crystal Palace (loan) 10 (0)

2015–
→ Ajax (loan) 1 (0)

National team‡

2008–2009
France U16 18 (18)

2009–2010
France U17 16 (9)

2010–2011
France U19 9 (2)

2013
France U20 10 (5)

2011–2014
France U21 8 (5)

What I am (Trying  ) to say is that Sanogo alone wasn't as bad a signing as you guys make out, it could have been a surprise, I am taking it in isolation, as did Quartz. How he was played, etc since and the cover of course is different, but its wrong to mix the two and assume he is shit- the stats till his signing don't seem to support that

Agree with Theoperator.

I have always said I have no problem with Wenger taking a punt on a player who goes on cheap wages (as far as we can make out). You just never know.

As long as we do not depend on these youngsters, as we did with Sanogo against Bayern

Mendez-Jiminez, Caballero, Svard, Malz, Nordveit, Bischoff, Joel Campbell - worth a go in youth and reserve games, give them a bench spot in the League Cup and see what happens.

Of course they cost a small fee, plus billeting and training expenses and some wages but if just one of them makes it then it might pay off.

Kolo Toure is a name that springs to mind. He cost us very little to buy, we got good service out of him for most of his career, and then sold him for a sizeable fee.
Another was Anelka...he was stroppy, but we made a massive profit, and bought Henry with some of it.

(And for all the uproar about the older Kallstrom being signed with a back injury, I actually thought he looked OK in the few games he played for us.)

Agree with Quartz: nothing wrong with taking a punt on cheap players (all clubs do it) but Sanogo was far too close to our first team which was utter madness.

He belonged in the reserves and Carling Cup team. Now, thankfully he's following the right path... on loan at Palace and now Ajax. Hopefully he'll get some game time and show some quality; if not, lets just hope Wenger doesn't give him a long term contract and a pay rise!

Do you think the club (apart from AW) is aware that we need signings?
The problem is that we don't need signings. Our goal is to finish top 4, and with the Cech signing our squad is good enough to do just that. If that's not the case, then Wenger must be deluded enough to genuinely believe this team is good enough, and that he has to prove everyone wrong by doing it his way :banghead:

Whatever's going on at Arsenal, there will be no world-class striker, battle-hardened CB or tough-bastard DM. Get your cocks out for another season of Ozil being played out on the wing, being told Ramsay, Walcott, Giroud and Francis 'Makelele' Coquelin are world-class, and deluded window-lickers referring to the community shield and FA Cup as 'top honours'.
Agree 100%, and wait for the wankathon when we scrape 4th on the last day. On a sidenote, can we please see the end of Arsenal fan TV, bunch of muppets, especially that Robbie fella, wouldn't know a football if it hit him on his over sized head.
Arsenal Fan TV is just making all us gooners look like proper twats
Couldn't agree more. I really hope last Sunday was the beginning of the end for them. Shame on Robbie for exploiting three clear mentalists (ty, bully, claude) for clicks and shirt sales. Hope he's proud of himself. The SuperFan culture they create is beyond obnoxious. Hope it gets worse for them at Palace. Claude might finally get his comeuppance for continually offering people out on twitter.

1 goal in the French top flight. Auxerre B play in the fourth tier (lol) and 10 of his 11 goals in his stint in their first team came in the coveted French Ligue 2.

I dont know if this is mentioned before but would we take a punt on Charlie Austin?
Definitely IMO better than Welbeck.
From Benzema, Cavani to Austin. Soon its going to be Balotelli by the end of the month. :banghead:

Its more that he was worth a punt with the record of goals, thats what I meant, obviously untested at high levels, but TBF with goals per game hes worth a look.

All that by aged 20? - not bad 8)

Drogba didn't even make his professional debut in the "coveted" Ligue 2 (Le Mans) until age 21.

From that I conclude that Sanogo is on an equal (or possibly higher! :o ) trajectory than Drogba was and... er.... not sure I have a point really :rubchin:

I've just read that Leicester look like signing Gokhan Inler for 3 million.

I've not seem him lately but he is still Switzerland captain. I thought he was a top DM for Inter and he could be a temporary solution for us.

The other bloke loads of people were desperate to sign (Yann M'Vila) looks like he's heading to Sunderland. What happened there then?

If all we can do on a transfer thread is debate the merits (or lack of them!) Of Sanogoals then we must be in a piss poor position regarding bringing anyone in.

Is it a step too far to wish Wenger dead? (I accept of course it is).
