The Cech fuck ups on Sunday smacks of a lack of defensive training for a new keeper and his back line. The line was too far away from the keeper and left room for players to run into and Le Coq went back to keep them all onside probably because like most of our defence he was trying to mark someone about 3 -4 " taller than him. It needs working on , maybe a little less 5 a side short passing games and some actual drilling might do the trick.

We haven't set up for set pieces properly for years. More often than not for free-kicks we are either far too high or far too deep, and we never have a player screening to head away the ball whipped (fairly low) across the front, which means an easily defendable ball becomes incredibly difficult to defend.

That said Cech should still have got there or stayed on his line. It was a good ball into a good area, and a good run with poor defending but it was an individual error from Cech to compound it.

Likewise the second goal was piss-poor defending for not closing down when there weren't even any forward runners to track, and as a keeper I can say the ball flies past you deceptively fast when somebody smashes it from 20-25 yards and you're caught slightly unsighted (as he was) or slightly flat-footed. But again, not really a lack of gelling or whatever, just poor defending compounded by poor keeping.

Anyone else agree here that on Saturday (and the defensive mistakes in mind) that we should drop per and have Gabriel and kos play in front of cech ?

1. Kos never reacted when the shammers free kick was taken for their first goal

2. Kos made zero attempt to close down zarete's shot for the second goal despite the fact that he was the nearest defender to him

All this and you want to drop BFG ahead of kos ?? Some people cant see beyond their dislike of mertesacker

Hes just too slow and too shit.
And too cowardly to boot. I dread to think how really shit we'd be at the back if the big facking german didnt have kos next to him covering.

Agree.

I see some thought that Kos was one of the few to come out with any credit after the Shammers game whereas I thought he was fucking diabolical.

I will say it again...The games he played in for the Chavs last year he showed himself up to be ponderous and past his best. Everyone says the keeper is worth 10 points at his best and the Chavski Lampost cost us 3 on day one

Agreed!

Just watched the highlights again, i agree with your first point augie but the second goal there was an oppertunity for per to come and attack the ball instead he stood still.

I would also like to point out that i for one have never had an out an out go at mertasacker on this forum apart from suggesting he should be dropped for the palace game. Again and for the second time in as many posts try and read what your actually acussing me of doing/saying before you post.

Benji, my criticism of your post was in no way a personal attack on what you said. All that being said, you did say that you believed that the BFG should be dropped and you may say that you weren't having an out and out go at the bfg, but dropping him when his defensive partner was far worse, suggests a decision not being made based on match performances

The giant snail also appears to have forgotten how to catch a ball in his 1 year exile from the Chavski first team and is flapping at crosses like Flappianski used to.

Still give him time - he's only 33

He was shit. Not saying he should have saved their goal but he should have certainly got a lot closer, so slow getting down and no footwork.

Looked flappy too and just stopped coming for crosses he should have been that were 4 or 5 yards out at the end.

Not impressed at all today.
