THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

There are so many holes in these recent Wenger tirades its laughable and although I know his time is up at Arsenal to say he should have been winning leagues the last 10 years (massively overachieving in the process when compared to our rivals substantially greater spending power) is quite frankly silly.

The last 2 years when we have allegedly had huge resources to compete with the top tier then I agree he has fallen well short in not recruiting the required level of player but before that he has kept Arsenal in the top four when overseeing the move to a huge stadium and although there has been some bad buys etc along the way we have still prevailed.

You can whine all day and pick out this player that player blah fucking cry blah but we still have kept above a host of teams that until recently outspent us including the spuds, newcastle, liverpool.

Sometimes I feel sorry for most posters on this forum because I truly believe unless we are winning the league every season you will still be bemoaning the missed chance of the next "super manager" that has passed us by.

Anyhow happy new year and I hope you all had a great Christmas and I am sure Santa brought you all you deserved (not you herd cos you are on the "pwopa nawty list" ), :barscarf:
Overachieving :coffeespit: :coffeespit:

Ah yes the old oil money excuse. Wow, must be all those oil money clubs that made him lose 8-2, get humiliated in the CL by PSV, Deportivo, and Valencia (twice), lose a cup final to a relegated team, spend over £170m on median wages in that period (check the numbers) and yet come nowhere close to winning a league title.
Forget winning, he has an obligation to compete for a league title, that's all. Even Brent managed that once at Scousers FFS. What's Lord Fraud done? Ah yes. Nada.

Meanwhile, managers like Simeone are competing with the 2 most powerful clubs in world football, and have managed to spend less than QPR do on wages and yet he's won a league title, won a cup in Real's backyard, (understandably this doesn't trump beating Hull or Tiny Tim's Villa ) and oh look at that, he's again top of the league in Spain despite a wage bill on a par with Stoke (again, check numbers). Maybe he's an outlier? Oh that's right, Klopp beat Bayern on multiple occasions despite having the resources of a Norwich. There's far more examples. Wenger achieved the bare minimum with his resources, this is well known.

Everyone can see that a decade of winning nothing, finishing 4th and getting tonked in the same way every year in Europe is Failure.
Oh wait no, it's "massive overachievement" :coffeespit:

I have to agree with Ike....to claim Wenger has overachieved is absolute nonsense. Overachieving by finishing 4th is what Moyes did with a virtually bankrupt Everton in 2005 having inherited a team of relegation fodder from the previous manager.....it is not doing it with what still remained one of the country's richest clubs from 2006 onwards. Wenger certainly did not enjoy the riches of Chavski or Citeh but he had more at his disposal than at least 15 other PL clubs, so in my view has achieved nothing more than par (sorry I hate that phrase too but couldn't think of anything better !)

There is a balance here - for every Atletico, Montpellier, Dortmund etc who have 'over achieved' and had their day in the sun, there is a Liverpool, Newcastle, Spuds etc who have blown fat wads of cash on rubbish and under achieved.....so it seems to me this whole argument goes round in circles. Wenger is clearly better than the likes of Sherwood, the Spuds long list of Messiahs, the Toon Army's long list of jokers etc......but that doesn't make him an overachiever....it just makes him better than a long list of shite !

I was sceptical about Simeone as being a 'one season wonder' in the same category as AVB, but for him to be maintaining a challenge against the two biggest clubs in European football despite having a massive gulf in resources and having the heart and soul ripped out of his team every season is starting to rival Klopp's achievements at Dortmund.

Would I want McClaren instead of Wenger.....err, no. Would I want Klopp or Simeone, possibly yes. Can't see what's wrong with admitting some managers are better than him and some are undoubtedly worse

I certainly didn't expect us to win every single league title since we moved to Cashburton, I just expected TOF to see us over the line in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014. We have a great chance to win the title this year, but recent history suggests that TOF will fuck it up again, given the underwhelming summer window and what will prove to be an underwhelming January window.

God forbid I actually expect a man who is taking home a king's ransom to, you know... actually do his fucking job after almost ten years outside the top two in the league and had nine years without a trophy. I expect him not to overpay bang average players and kids who proved nothing yet in the grand scheme of things. I expect him not to make pre-arranged, predictable substitutions that have only a vague bearing on how the match is going. I expect him to sign talented players that upgrade what we currently have in the first team. I expect him to coach the players on something more than passing and I expect him to give instructions to the players during the match that might actually help us to achieve the results we need to achieve.

Not much to ask, is it? I think what I am describing is the fundamental duties of a football manager, amongst other things.

TOF used to do some of those things, either that or DD pushed him to. Now he seems to be a bank manager who only coaches tippy-tappy gutless shite.

Yep, brilliant post. You'll be very popular here if you continue following the sheep on here....... :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:
The only sheep are the AKB as well as the Tarquins and tourists at Cashburton.

Absolutely. The rest of your post is spot on.

It's no secret that we overpay players and waste money. I wouldn't mind having that Socialist Wage Policy if I got £50-60K per week regardless of performance.

Looking at the wreckage of the last 10 years one starts to wonder now if Wenger EVER really coached the players. Did he really "create" Henry, Viera, Bergkamp, Pires, Keown, Adams, Cole....etc,etc or were they just a magical, talented bunch who went out and played as they knew how to play. Maybe it wouldn't of mattered if he was there or not?? And for every Henry, there have been half a dozen, Kallstroms, Sanogo's, Bendtners and the like. Very, very occasionally we get a gem and all his supporters rave but the horrendous flops are never mentioned. And how many real journeyman are still on the books on obscene wages?? He buys this shit then sticks with them trying to convince everybody they're gold because if he admits they're crap, what does that make him?? Is there a man anywhere in the world on such good money who is so unaccountable???

A very educated, eloquent response (for you), so an improvement of Gibbs-esque proportions.
