What will £70M get you these days?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

What will £70M get you these days?

Post by GoonerMuzz »

So Arsene has been give a £70M+ war chest for this summer, now granted we'll probably see some or most of the following out going - Arteta, Flamini, Rosicky, Gibbs, Merts and Ox and if we're lucky may make at the high end 30M (I'm estimating because the two English players will get more than they're worth), we''re looking in the region of a total of 100M.

Our team needs a completely new spine, and desperately needs additions for depth elsewhere, so i ask exactly what can you get for £70M plus a potential additional £30M these days?

AW is notoriously frugal when it comes to spending but even he would struggle to rebuild a seriously deficient squad from that amount of cash, so even if he was to put aside his scruples could he really do it (this is hypothetical so try not to get into a debate over his merits as a manager/coach please).

There was me thinking the joke thread was in the basement  ,I wouldn't give that man any money,he s more likely to give Walcott ,Gibbs and flamini new contracts with any money he gets.

Good job you didn't put £100m in the title of the thread lads because he's already answered that question before, remember?

I would give it back to him

A lot if spent wisely. If we spunk £50m like City did on Sterling than it is a waste. But to think Marhez cost a pittance at £400k and we could of had Javiar Hernandez for £10m.

It's the old bugger spending it is the worry. And he won't spend a 1/4 of that in the summer.

It will get us another 7 seasons (allowing for pay rises) of the greatest manager of all time and this will ensure that we continue our record to 25 consecutive seasons of doing fu.ck all in the champs league    By that time we will also have gone 19 seasons without winning the premier league, but this will be cushioned by the fact that club captain (and all round nice guy) wally Walcott will have brought his game up to a new level and is scoring a whopping 12 goals a season by then  8) Not a bad return for his 285k per week wage   :banghead:

I think you're all being too cynical :D

I was being serious though, putting aside his and our scouts normal inefficiency can we seriously put together a squad capable of challenging on a mere £70-100M (Outliers like Mahrez aside because they are not the norm).

I'll be honest i really don't think we can!

People keep saying how their favourite, whoever that may be is good enough if the right players are round them or the right formation is picked etc but i've said it before this team needs revitalising root and branch i just don't think we're good enough in too many places. A new spine alone would not resolve the problem.

For me it's not just the first team which is deficient but the bench is woefully lacking, i genuinely look at our bench most weeks and think where's the game changers, and that's a major issue in itself...... :rubchin:

One or two great players. Maybe?

TOF wouldn't want to pay those prices anyway :banghead:

We'll probably sign 14 children for the youth team, who will only get a few token appearances for the senior side and end up playing in the Ryman League :suicide:

It's not a question of what £70m or £75m will get you, it is about throwing out a figure and seeing how many season tickets will be renewed as a result..

It depends on whether u have a scouting network that works 24 hrs a day 7 days a week.

All our lot could find in January to improve our threadbare squad was a guy who is not deemed better than captain pointsalot.

How many years has this "warchest" been mentioned now.

If he spends £70 million (net) I will cut off my bollox with a blunt spoon and eat them bushtucker trial style.
