Why is it everyone thinks to be a cdecent centre half you have to be huge?

I agree we need physical prescence but that doesn't automatically come from buying any old giant.

Well they both just bolted a little bit higher up the central defensive pecking order from the sounds of things.

In Spain you may get away with having defenders under 6ft but this is England and in England you have sides like Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn who put 11 men behind the ball and hoof the ball towards a tall target man or who look for free kicks and corners.

That is a very simplistic way of looking at things I am afraid. If it was that easy we would simply buy a giant and wheel him out against certain opposition.

Agreed. We shoulda bought that giraffe Crouch and played him there if that logic was to be followed.

I agree. You have to have at least one bloke at 6'4" in the centre back slot. Of course this doesn't automatically make him a great CH but with the ammount of "direct" teams in the PL you need that aerial dominance from at least one player. If you have one tall CH you can then accomodate a smaller, more "ball comfortable" player like Gallas.

Ball comfortable??!! :-P

Probelm with Crouch is he's too tall. That's right players can be too talla swell. I mean think about it if you're like 6ft7 you need to bend down more to meet crosses, furthermore you do still need pace to get on to crosses. The perfect height i'd say is 6ft 2/3.

Yes but aerial dominance does not come from just being tall.

Also, you have to consider the movement of the forwards and the efect that hs on a defence. If the opposition has a 6ft 2 forward do you simply detail your 6 ft 4 centre half to follow him wherever he goes?

If you do, you will get mugged as quick as you like. Simply tell your tall striker to drag the giant centre half to the corner flags and hey presto you have a huge great hole in your back four.

Great defences are usually built around a great understanding between the centre halves.
