From what I've heard the guy inside the mascot is retiring this year and Vieira is coming back to fill his boots as the new Gunnersaurus.

This is the only scenario that would make sense in my mind.

Since i have no faith we will buy a top notch DCM i would be a lot more excited about Paddy coming back than going into the season with only Song and Denilson again so their manipulation has already worked.
We only need a Makalele-style DM if we’re gonna be playing 3 in the middle. Imo a deep-lying midfielder in a 2-man midfield would leave Cesc too isolated in the middle of the park. It was the same with the Bert/Cesc partnership. Cesc worked well with Flamini cos they played side-by-side & Flamini won us the ball back much quicker & therefore much higher up the pitch, allowing Cesc to do his work in more dangerous areas. Ideally we need a similarly dynamic MF but with the half-man/half-Bison build of Essien. I dont know who that is but I do know that Vieira isn't him any more. What he could offer us off the pitch is another thing entirely.
