As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I agree we need physical prescence but that doesn't automatically come from buying any old giant.

In Spain you may get away with having defenders under 6ft but this is England and in England you have sides like Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn who put 11 men behind the ball and hoof the ball towards a tall target man or who look for free kicks and corners.
I agree. You have to have at least one bloke at 6'4" in the centre back slot. Of course this doesn't automatically make him a great CH but with the ammount of "direct" teams in the PL you need that aerial dominance from at least one player. If you have one tall CH you can then accomodate a smaller, more "ball comfortable" player like Gallas.
Ball comfortable??!!
Yes but aerial dominance does not come from just being tall.
Also, you have to consider the movement of the forwards and the efect that hs on a defence. If the opposition has a 6ft 2 forward do you simply detail your 6 ft 4 centre half to follow him wherever he goes?
If you do, you will get mugged as quick as you like. Simply tell your tall striker to drag the giant centre half to the corner flags and hey presto you have a huge great hole in your back four.
Great defences are usually built around a great understanding between the centre halves.
yes that is indeed true, and I suppose it is the risk you run with players selected more for physical attributes rather than skill. And there are of course shorter players that can get up (me included!! ).
Your mention of pulling giant CH's to the corner flag is oddly relevant. I once had a managaer that used our tallest striker (6'3") in such a way at set pieces. He'd just keep nudging the biggest CH and then "walk" him out to the edge of the box. Didn't always work but we got a few goals that way...
I'm around 6ft 2. Reckon Wenger will give me a go?
Aerial strength isn't always decided purely by height, but for intimidation factor too it is important to have a tall centre back. Especially in England.
Look at Tim Cahill though, not a giant, but I'd back him anytime to win the ball in the box, and most of the time he would!

Kolo if you go thanks for the the years of loyal service and you were much loved. Go and get a nice wage and chill out at Shity, I don't think anyone will boo your one of the players I would applaud when you return to the Emirates! 16 mil and 25 mil = 41 million Thanks City for an over-the hill defender and a lazy crunt. Minus Varmelean money we are still 31 million to the good plus whatever transfer money we had next stop Eboue 12 million, senderos £8.
