This constant assumption that we are talking about any old twat thats over six foot is misleading to say the least, if i say we need a DCM that can tackle that doesn't mean it'd be OK if he ran like a snail and passed like Eboue or if i say we need a goaly that can come out and take crosses that doesn't mean i don't want him to be able to stop shots as well and i think everyone is aware of that, so why every time this conversation comes up about centre halfs do some people come up with the same misleading responses...
Yes we know that some tall cb's can't play and can't run and are shit in the air...but they are not the big centre halfs that we are talking about, don't you think it's a given that we want a guy thats bigger and strong in the air, but also has a good all round game.
I know sometimes the club behaves like a non league team when it comes to buying players, defenders in particular, but i still expect them to be able to find big CB's that can do a little bit more than just header the ball, and if they can't i'm sure i could find a few for them.

Very true but I also believe that having two players that compliment each other is equally important.

I think a lot of us said that we would judge Wenger on this summers comings and goings and I don't think any of us can say he is making it anything less than interesting.green gooner wrote:Time to get your finger out NOW Arsene mate
Letting a mercenary striker go who nobody liked is one thing but the last Invincible in a position we are already seen as weak in..........that's another story!
If he does not buy then we need explanations why and I for one will not be accepting the usual "we have tremendous youth" etc bollocks.

Again thats a given for me, i expect that as a minimal requirement, most of the reason we don't have that is because our manager doesn't seem to understand the requirements of a centre back pairing, therefore we tend to play with two individuals who play the same way, they are both good at the same things and they are both weak at the same things so they don't compliment each others games, there is no balance, and that makes both of them look bad.Percy Dalton wrote:Bergkamp-Genius wrote:This constant assumption that we are talking about any old twat thats over six foot is misleading to say the least, if i say we need a DCM that can tackle that doesn't mean it'd be OK if he ran like a snail and passed like Eboue or if i say we need a goaly that can come out and take crosses that doesn't mean i don't want him to be able to stop shots as well and i think everyone is aware of that, so why every time this conversation comes up about centre halfs do some people come up with the same misleading responses...

Personally i would go to Chelski now and offer them 15-20m for Alex and pair him up with Gallas or Vermaalen, he's the ideal centre half for the english game he's a big lump but he's also very mobile and comfortable on the ball, but even more importantly he is an out and out defender so he knows how to defend naturally and he knows how to organise a defence, which none of our players do because most of them have pretensions of being footballers rather than defenders, they don't really know the art of defending they are just athletes who have found themselves playing at centre half.
If you put the pacier more mobile Gallas or Vermaalen next to someone like Alex you have the ideal pairing, then it's down to building an understanding and thats about coaching and time.
