Technically Diaby has what Vieira had at the same age, but he now starting to add some steel to his game and is not dwelling on the ball too long.

Song has improved but I don't think he is the long term answer to the Vieira type player that we need.
Hi Mickey,

In the most politest, nicest, non confrontational way I can put this.

Diaby has never played as the anchoring DM for Arsenal. He is not and never will be a DM. He plays too much with attacking in mind and has an uncanny ability to try and take on too many players in the wrong half of the field. He can dominate a game going forward as Vieira used to but has fuck all ability to anything going the other way.

Song for all his limited abilities, will anchor in that position. He may not often excel at it so it's important we don't get carried away but for sure he has about 100 times better a shot at being Arsenal's DM than Diaby will ever have.

And with our league run and cup run I can't say that I would complain about that. We badly missed that big signing for the first half of the season, but Song, Denilson and Diaby have come of age now.
That's what worries me.

This good run we're on might convince Wenger that we don't need to strengthen much.

BUT I still don't think Denilson is the ideal partner for Cesc, and Diaby is still an unknown as the guy can't stay fit!

I'm delighted for Song, but he is still a raw talent... and lets not go overboard here... he's playing well, but there's plenty of room for improvement still!!!!

Keep Song for another year, but buy in a DM to replace the useless Denilson....

Totally disagree with you, Diaby played both games in CM against Roma and won loads of tackles, Arsenal have never really played with a midfield anchorman anyway, we normally play with 2 CM's in the middle of the park.

Diaby has ironed out the dwelling on the ball, which only happened because Wenger has tinkered with his position since he arrived at the club. Diaby will be the best CM out of him, Song and Denilson

The anchor role has been used for Song as he doesn't have much technical ability. The only other player I can remember playing in an anchor role for us before Song was Grimandi!!!

I really don't want this to come out the wrong way but you are a real poster? Not an alter-ego?

Read Gilberto and Flamini for the position not filled since Grimandi. I the last two seasons.

Normally I would roll eyes and try to pick that apart in a really arsey way but this is the new me. 8)

Do you know what an anchor role is mate?

Gilberto and Flamini played alongside Fabregas, not behind him. An anchor sits in front of the defence and behind the CM's.

Maybe you are rolling your eyes whilst watching games, yeah I think that your problem mate!!!

Your words sunshine. Definsive midfielder.

So by your busted logic Fabreags is a defensive midfielder. He has to be as he certainly can't be a creative or attacking midfielder can he playing alongside those mentioned.

Just for you, bang heads and rolling eyes.

Diaby can definately play DM he has the physical attributes to play in that role, as well as being great technically. Vieira was a DM but could create goals as well.

Fabregas has always sat alongside a more defensive player. Fabregas can tackle as well as creating goals which is his greatest attribute.

To suggest that Fabregas cannot be an attacking CM as he plays alongside a DM means that you are chatting shit!

I've looked through the first postings but Song was immense for the Arsenal tonight. Ok, he looks lapsidasical at times, but as the season goes on, he is getting better, (I wished him injured earlier on ) but now he is one of our best players.

Perhaps I'm getting a bit softer in older age....

But I don't give a fuck if he performs like this everytime for us! The Arsenal....

In Europe and against lower league sides in the domestic cups you get away with a poor first touch and lack of pace, in PL agaiisnt at leat 17 oit of the 19 opponents you don't...that is and always will be the problem with Song.

Diaby usually has an attacking role when he plays but I suppose you could call him a box to box player as well. Like Cesc, who is the link between the defence and midfield and the midfield and attack at the same time.

he's gotten away with it very well in the league I thought.

But maybe that's because he doesn't actually have a bad first touch and isn't slow.

Actually, there's no maybe about it.
