arsenal v lazio

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Maybe nobody wanted to buy him - or maybe AW really does see something that we don't. He did say last season that people would be proved wrong about Song! Then again, Cygan, Stepan.....

The wrong Song for Arsenal - Always out of tune .

Senderos at the moment has had a good pre season & trying to leave the ghosts of 2006/07 behind
In the future if he can hold a place in the team he might be the 'swiss Tony' we all have been saying & wanted
Hoyte i also rate very much & hope he has another good season with Arsenal & just to say that his Charlton goal in January was brillant (ages ago i know 8) )

can't believe I'm saying this having been at Craven Cottage for the worst individual performance in an Arsenal shirt since Kevin Campbell cleared a couple of Arsenal shots of the line and Rioch's Bolton knocked us out of the FA CUP.

But Song looked pretty solid - used the ball better than Flamini and has a similar work-ethic. If he moves ahead of Matthieu in the centre-mid queue then surely our favourite moley Corsican really should have moved in the summer...I think Matty offers a real engine and pops up with a few goals but it looks like Song's (individually) successful stint at Charlton has reinvigorated him.

Denilson is obviously more an alternative to Cesc than Gilberto.
Who's our first back-up at defensive mid? Diaby's played on the left more than in central midfield (where did he play in the CC final?) Djourou played there last game of the season v Pompey and Toure came of the bench last night and fitted in there. Kolo in the midfield is an interesting option - Gallas + Senderos could be a more naturally complementary CB pairing - Swiss Tony the thud and blunder aerial foil to Gallas' dominant pace and reading of the game.

So far Gallas and Toure, both world class defenders, have not paired well. Hopefully they can work it out and their more cultured style of defending may be perfect for the CL. In the sort of game where you defend a lot of crosses in2 the box Senderos might have something more to offer. (ironically the best example I can think of is a CL game - when we where knocked out by Bayern but won 1-0 at Highbury, Phillipe was immense that day winning everything in the air)

I don't think I saw Song play 90 mins for Charlton - he was picked out and praised at least twice on match of the day. He was brilliant in the 6-3 CC game at Liverpool.

Personally I'm not as confident in Diaby defensively as some seem to be - he has Vieiraesque stature and looks strong on the ball but desn't hav the anticipation and lateral defensive movement of Flamini and Song let alone 'the invisible wall' Gilberto

I have to say that I thought song was nothing short of woeful last night and if there was an award for the most stupid fouls to concede in a season he would win it on last nights performance alone. Overall I thought it was a poor performance with the exceptions being clichy(again) eduardo, traore, rosicky & flamini (although maybe I am just comparing him to song). Big Phil & bedtner were good at times and dire at other times while hoyte again showed that effort alone will not make you a good enough player at the top level.

I know that it was by & large a 2nd string line up but where we ran into trouble last season was when we had injuries and had to look towards the 2nd string and from what they showed last night we havent improved depthwise from at all. The need for more purchases is still there for me and, like many gooners, I hope almunia is not 2nd choice this season

Agree with you augie

Our first eleven looks strong but i am worried about our second string especially when the ANC starts.Senderos really scares me.On the subject of Almunia why hasn"t Wenger played Fabianski in any of the high profile friendlies? I have never been a fan of Almunia last night he saved a ball that was going 3 yards wide!!!

Jens number 1 Fabianski number 2
