ARSENAL AND YOU

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Please fill in the questions.

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?
Dad a gooner, when I was about 6 or 7 I showed an interest in Man Utd. (Best, Law, Charlton era - everyone at school (Berkshire) supported them), so was taken to Highbury

HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?
since early 70's

WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?
Lost 2-0 to Coventry - Peter Marinello was playing - early 1970's

WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?
Liam Brady

WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?
Clock End (standing)

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?
1989 at Anfield (on TV unfortunately - family and kids at that time)

TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?
Kenny Sansom last Saturday, occasionally Charlie George and Sammy Nelson at the Emirates

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?
Home and Away - both 1971

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?
1st North London Derby - we won 2-0, David Price and Frank Stapleton scored (I think)

The peanut seller on the clock end and North Bank

Jack Kelsey serving in the gunners shop (aka garden shed) at the back of the clock end

Players parking their cars under the clock end and walking through the fans to the East stand - Brian Talbot used to stand for ages signing autograph's!

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?
Do we chant at home!!!! Funny chants this year away were Alkmaar fans singing in a Dutch "Steve McLaren" accent "Your support is fcuking shit"!! and us at Everton to both of the fans that remained at the final whistle "Is there a fire drill"

At Alkmaar "We're all shagging a european whore" to the tune of "we're all going on a european tour"

At the pre game area in Barcelona, Spainish reporter live on TV "You're getting fucked by Eboue" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddx0Lyi0v5M

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?
Not sure, evidently I kept badgering my dad to take me to see them, I was 5 years old
HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?
Since 1971
WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?
I believe it was Sheffield United at home in 1971
WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?
Liam Brady, by a mile!
WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?
Started off in the North bank but couldn't see much as I was so short so we moved to the West Lower, a couple of blocks from the corner where the away section ended up. When I was tall enough, about 12, we moved back to the North Bank. We always stood left of centre about 12 yards up from the pitch. When I got to 15/16 I moved to the middle of the North Bank, my old man stayed where we always went 8) . When we went all seater, I got a bond and sat to the right of centre in the North bank upper, till we moved. My dad died of cancer in 1991 aged 55
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?
Anfield 89 - I was there
Spuds, league cup semi when Rocky got the winner at the death - amazing noise in the Arsenal end
Milan 1 Arsenal 5 - I hate Milan as a place, this was my second trip there but boy I never thought we would win, let alone take the piss!!
:barscarf:
TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?
Ray Parlour, on the piss in 'Edwards' in Romford, I shook his hand and said hello after he came out the toilet....hope he washed it!!
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?
1971 home shirt, the JVC away shirt, mainly yellow with a thick blue stripe across the middle.....my fave shirt of all
WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?
The first time I walked up the steps onto the north bank for a night game, still makes the hairs on my neck stand up when I think about it now. When I saw that green carpet for the first time under floodlights, the crowd singing, a cold night, wow...wish I could remember who we played!!
WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?
There's been so many, difficult to remember them....
Not so much a chant by a guy who always used to stand next to me on the north bank did the same thing a few times each season. For anyone who used to go, you remember the peanut sellers who used to push through the crowds with a huge sack of bagged up peanuts....you'd always here them before you saw them 'Peanuts....Peanuts....Roasted Peanuts....' The guy next to me would let him push through the crowd, go about 10 feet past then shout 'ere mate'....the guy would push his way back and the guy next to me would say 'Are they roasted'.............'Yes mate'........'oh, I don't want them then, don't like 'em roasted' God knows how the geezer selling them didn't hit him!!

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?

I started watching my local team AFC Bournemouth. In 1987 my dad took me to my first away game at Exeter City. Bmth then played Southampton in the next round and beat them over two legs, I wasnt allowed to go as it was bound to be lively! My dad promised we could go to the next round if we got through, fortunately we drew Arsenal at Highbury and that night I began supporting Arsenal! Bmth lost 3-0 and I was blown away by the size of the ground etc etc!

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?
GloryHunting parents moved to Islington in summer of '71 saw the street parties and became Gooners thinking we would win the league every year! 18 years later till we did. I was born in '76
HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?
First went as an 8 year old, wasn't allowed but sold panini stickers and cigarette cards at school for the £2. Pretended to my mum I was going to play football on HigburyFields. When I first went it was just to see large groups of blokes swearing. Have to say I still love swearing. Really fell in love with football in '86 - the World Cup. Starting going all the time in 86/87 so from then I guess.
WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?
can't remember, spent the whole time watching the crowd not the game...
WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?
I thought remembered watching an FA Youth Cup win with Adams. Bould, Rocastle, Thomas, Merson and Davis but on Wikipedia the only Arsenal Youth Cup team is rather less glamourous: Hillier, Morrow, Heaney, Campbell (Miller in goal who I remember saying would play for England!) - sure I saw a youth team win something and really wanted that group to break through... Loved Rocky the best, then Limpar when we signed him. As a teenager couldn't have loved Wrighty any more. Bergkamp was my favourite player in the world before we bought him!
WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?
Everywhere but only had seasontickets in NorthBank and EastUpper
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?
Too many... Home: Henry tearing up Liverpool. especially when Carragher, Hamman and some no-hoper (Biscuits?) all start fouling themselves and each other for Henry's wonder goal. The Nike ad 'Gary Who?' last game on the clockend when Wrighty gets his hattrick to be top scorer - bombing through onto a Seman throwout when that big exMillwall muppet (forgotten name) tries to haul him down.
Winterburn taking the piss of Mclairs missed pen. Manure having to do a guard of honour for the champions a few years later.
CWC semi v Sampdoria what a game! (moanie Mancini manmarking the ref)
Ars v Juve super high class game. Henry awesome for 20mins. DB tango dances their defence to death at the end. Winning the league v Everton in '98. I cried. Coming back from 2 nil down v Villa when Merse scored.
Loved watching a few away games at Highbury - remember us battering Ipswich in the Cup the day after Adams stacked down the steps of that club by the Business Design Centre... what was it called?
Us beating Spuds - Kanu wonder goal and hearing Liverpool had drawn with Manure was epic (were there some Spuds fans in Highbury that night or did I dream that...)
Away games Inter away already mentioned - great day. Standard Liege 7-0. Was watching the RealMadrid game on TV in thailand but loved that. Prob favourite FA cup replay 93 @Elland Rd. They were champions and we were 1 nil up (Smudger) and 2-1 down (Shutt then Mcallister spanked a FK) Wrighty at the end + in extra time. PSG away the birth of 1-0 to the Arsenal (a game we drew 1-1!) they had a sick team and their fans were insane. Bizarrely both Paris 94 and 06 were great days/nights out. Being at Copenhagen 94 is a HUGE favourite though my dad going as mad as I've ever seen anybody go. PreMatch prediction was 5-0 Parma.
TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?
Met several, never really say much. Tried to shake Glenn Helder's hand in a nightclub loos and he made me wash my hands first! fair enough
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?
Arsenal 91 home - bruised nana away (92 was it..?)
WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?
being a little kid - smells and sounds I was blown away. Last game v Wigan walking up my steps and nearly crying. Standing by the East stand at the end of the season with Wrighty going mad out the dressing room window (96 and 98!)
WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?
several all ready mentioned (Sol, Cashley, FatEddieMurphy, Kanu + Caprice) not funny but my favourite was singing we are unbeatable for quite some time
WHERE DO YOU SIT AT ASHBURTON GROVE? EastUpper level with NorthBank pen area - 110.
