Pacquiao to pursue new opponent

Manny Pacquiao will start negotiations with Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto after a deadline to agree a clash with American Floyd Mayweather Jr expired.

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said talks with unbeaten Mayweather to arrange a bout for 13 November were now over, although the clash could still happen.

A fight with Mayweather for earlier in 2010 was called off over Pacquiao's failure to agree to blood testing.

"The fight we wanted is Mayweather, but he didn't want to commit," said Arum.

The pair are considered the two best pound-for-pound boxers in the sport and a fight between them would likely be the richest in history.

And after Filipino Pacquaio succumbed to Mayweather's blood and urine testing requests in May it looked as if a fight between the pair would happen in November.

"I am sure, without knowing, that there is a very good reason why Mayweather hasn't committed at this time," added Arum.

Arum suggested that the issue over drug testing had been resolved and speculated that the pending trial of Mayweather's uncle and trainer Roger over a charge - which he has denied - of attacking a female boxer could be why the undefeated American would not agree to fight this year.

"I really believe this issue with the uncle has an affect," continued Arum.

"If I were in his shoes I wouldn't want to go into this big fight without my trainer."

Pacquiao defeated Cotto (35 wins and two defeats) in November 2009 and could agree a rematch with the Puerto Rican fighter or take on Mexican Margarito (38-6), who has only just returned to the ring after being banned for a year for wearing illegal hand wraps.

Arum said he expected it to take only a week to negotiate a contract with either opponent, both of whom fight in his Top Rank stable.

"I have to discuss with Manny to see who he prefers. The decision falls on Manny," stated Arum.

Arum also suggested that Pacquiao could fight Mayweather in 2011, although the Filipino who has just been elected into congress in his homeland said in May that he would only fight once more.

Looks like its off again :banghead:

Delayed court date pushes back possibility of Floyd Mayweather's ring return

After news broke last week that Roger Mayweather, uncle and trainer to former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather, managed to avoid jail time over his alleged assault of a female boxer, many began to predict that his nephew could expect a similar outcome to his own court case.

As widely reported this morning though, the preliminary hearing for Mayweather's domestic violence case was today pushed back to March 10th following an appeal for a continuance from his lawyer.

The move seems a strange one given the fact that an ongoing case will at the very least delay any thoughts of him stepping into the ring this year. While many fans were hoping for a late spring or summer return as per his comments after beating Shane Mosley last May, it now looks doubtful that Mayweather will fight before the autumn at the very earliest and can expect several more court appearances until then.

One of which will be a misdemeanor trial next month for allegedly prodding a security guard in the face with his finger, which stemmed from a dispute over where he had parked some of his cars. Unlike his domestic abuse trial, which carries a potential maximum sentence of 34 years all told, the poke carries only a six month maximum and will likely result in a fine at the worst.

Recent comments from Mayweather stating that he would indeed fight rival Manny Pacquaio as well as the fact that Roger Mayweather eluded jail time in his own trial had once more encouraged fans to hope that the two boxing greats would once again attempt to put together a fight in the near future.

Realistically until all his legal matters are settled one way or the other though, Mayweather cannot even entertain the idea of accepting a fight due to the fact that he doesn't know what he is going to be doing that far into the future. Ideally Floyd tends to have at least a 12 week training camp for a fight, usually with a media tour early on. With court dates set to punctuate his calender for the next few months though a schedule like that would be difficult if not impossible to follow.

Although it now looks unlikely, he could conceivably have to serve time in jail for the alleged assaults. If not he could also be forced to attend domestic abuse counseling or perhaps anger management which would make keeping a full training schedule difficult.

It could also be the case that Mayweather, who turns 34 next month, still has no desire to return to the sport due to the plethora of other activities he has involved himself in of late aside from his string of mainly petty offenses. Namely the launching of several companies including a website, modeling agency and production company as well as several others.

If Mayweather leaves a return too late though, he could well find himself past his best and in stark danger of losing his oft boasted about unbeaten 41-0 record.
