Wenger got it right tonight

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I can see what Quartz is saying (though a tad harsh on Nasri, thought he held the ball up well in first half) and defensively, there is much work to be done if we are to have a hope in the second leg but I thought Wenger generally got it right last night.

I think the overall performance was riddled with errors, fair play the substitutions came off for once but too often the ball was lost due to over-playing in tight areas and defenders reluctance to play safe and go long until we were winning in the final minutes.

Thought RVP looked lost on his own up front but Theo looked dangerous running from deep.

A wins a win as they say

I agree. Look it was one of those memorable nights and great credit to us for coming back after they gave us another lesson for the first 60 mins but in the first half it was criminal that the outlet was Alves nearly every time and defence and midfield just couldn't seem to communicate to pick him up. Surely Wenger could have made a change in set up or got a message over to nullify the danger.
BUT.........what a night. :barscarf:

People werent seriously expecting us to beat barca with an entirely clean, polished and dominant performance were they? We were always going to have to keep our heads high in periods without seeing the ball, ride our luck and attack with precision.

We did all of these things.

This is one of the few times i can honestly say that Im seriously proud of those millionaires in red & white 8)

Personally I thought wenger was 100% right taking theo off - he was hardly facing the best left back in the world and despite looking threatening cos of his pace, he actually contributed fcuk all  Saying that I fully expect the 2nd leg to suit him a lot better especially if we can hold them scoreless for the first 30 minutes or so cos then they will have to open up a bit more and that will suit him

That said I cant understand those claiming all wengers substitutions to be spot on......wenger did fcuk all as far as I am concerned :? Not slating the guy as such cos I will never ever fathom the idea of playing him as a winger but be honest he didnt do much either did he ?

We did. Helped by passionate, unswerving support from those of us privileged to have been there and the collective will of the greater Arsenal nation.

The look on Wengers face when the two goals went in gave me great pleasure. The amount of stick this guy has had from the media and fans throughout his reign as Arsenal manager has sometimes gone a bit far. I was really made up with the win over Barca, and shows the players a desperate to repay the faith the manager has shown in his team. I wanted to run up and hug him great stuff MR Wenger.

I feel against Barca Theo is more of a threat coming on. Easrly on in games they're so tight its hard to have him as an outlet. But Barca tire an awful lot. If it was 0-0 in the Nou Camp with 70 minutes gone, putting Theo on would be such an ace card.

The Forum goes ballistic when we lose. Most people post pointing out errors, and what they would have done had they been manager and not Wenger.

Why should it be different after a win?

We are all very happy with the result and tow very good goals, but it was a close thing and was far from a perfect performance.

Having seen our 2002 - 2004 team put in some of the best performances ever seen by a football team in any place at any time, we have high standards to live up to.

Our 2002-2004 teams wouldnt have made light work of this barca team, either.

Not saying this team is at that vintage because they are yet to go out and make their own history, but i believe they have the talent and (increasingly) the balls to do so.

Very interesting to see the papers in Spain today – there is a lot of talk about Barca being over the hill, the manager losing it, poor substitution and the like.

Reads like the way the English papers talk about Arsenal at every opportunity. Absolutely no eulogising about Barca – they thought it a poor show.

Spoke to some Barca fans on the train, nice guys as it goes and very good losers.

They said that they controlled nearly the whole game which is true. Then they went on to say that technically we were to fast for them in the last 25minutes. That they couldn’t cope with it.

A big compliment that
