No signings in Jan

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

When we signed Arshavin it was the morale booster needed to drag us into fourth spot that season. The same will happen this season, if it looks like we're going to drop out of the top four, he'll make a signing and do just enough.

No ambition other than fourth spot. That is the objective for the season.
When we have a few injuries, it will take more than a couple of signings to make top 4.
Absolutely but we've been bloody lucky to qualify for the CL at times - such as the Sp*rs last day at West Ham.

It's only when we actually drop out of the top four that people might actually open their eyes to what's going on at the club.

The lack of ambition is a disgrace - I don't understand why the vast majority of arsenal fans have gone from the invincibles to simply unquestionably accepting fourth place at best every season.
I don't want to keep banging on about it but the stadium hardly shows that the club has no ambition.

See if Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool spend millilons when they begin to develop a new stadium.

That's the crux of the issue for many. Is the club's ambition still on the pitch or now mostly directed at the business? :?

The only way for change to occur is a fifth place finish. Therefore I for one would not be concerned by no signings. If anyone cones it'll be Moussa Sow or Bodmer or someone French and shit like Kalou.
Fifth place will change a few things. Not everything, but a lot. Try flogging £1300 STs for a Europa League team? LOL
I don't agree Wenger wants to win. Nope. He wants to be known to play the best football first. Winning "isn't everything". NO winner accepts "second place for the next twenty years". Fact.

I think Wenger was making a point when he said second place for 20 years. He doesn't want to do that, but he was saying that consistancy is often overlooked by fans and the media alike. I'm not happy with 4th being good enough, but we're hardly the onle ones who act that way. Its a facet of modern football.

Name ONE elite club manager that has ever made a similar statement about second place. And name one who claims FOURTH is better than a trophy (as Wenger has). The excuses some ppl use to defend him are laughable...

I think you might be misreading a few posts on this one. I can't see many "defending" him on this thread.

Alot of his quotes are taken out of context as well. Sure, alot of them are the mutterings of a retarded gerbil post-Rhino gangbang, but I think the "4th place is better than a trophy" comment has to be seen in context.

What trophy? Let's say the CC?

I'd rather finish 4th than win that devalued piece of shit trophy because finishing 4th gives us an opportunity to make alot of money in the CL. Of course I'd rather have both the trophy and the CL, but given an out and out choice as the CC stands? I'd take 4th tbh.

Of course Lord Vader devalues my argument to a certain extent by refusing to invest enough of that extra cash from the CL in quality players, which is the criteria I'd use to justify prefering 4th over the CC to begin with!! :banghead:

Don't think you understood anything I said. I wasn't defending him, merely putting into context what he said and what he meant. He doesn't want to finish second, of course he doesn't.

I'ld much prefer Arsenal to win trophies, but modern football is dictated by money, therefore 4th has become more prestigious. Am I happy about that? No. But its the way it is

DB10 you genuinely would take 4th over an actual trophy?

I dunno really tbh... I think the way the CC is just a shit trophy now (sadly) and IF (a BIG IF) we had a manager that would invest the subsequent CL income in building a proper team to challenge for the PL, FA cup and CL then I think I probably would prefer to finish 4th over a CC trophy... But I suppose as Lord Vader will NEVER do that, it's a bit of a moot argument. :(

I can believe in long term planning. But only if there is an actual PLAN!
