Probably the best result for us, although always hate to see the scum get anything out of a game.

I cant see us getting 6 points. A chavs win may have done us a favour because then its 4 points and beat the scum in goal difference. That would have been hilarious.

Re: Weekend games - May the 4th be with you...
All I'm saying is that we have to go to two teams that are not on form and struggling to stay in the league. When it comes down to six points, I'd rather play teams in 18th and 17th place than 1st and 2nd.g88ner wrote:Why?Perryashburtongroves wrote:To be fair, if we can't beat two relegation-threatened teams, then we don't deserve to play in the Champions League.![]()
Chelsea have dopped 5pts v QPR and couldn't beat Reading away. Whereas Sp*rs dropped 5pts vs. Wigan, dropped 4pts vs Norwich and lost at QPR, so how does that fit in with your logic about which of the 3 teams "deserves" to miss out?![]()
Surely the only important thing is to finish with more points after 38 games?; where you collect those points is irrelevant. To start weighting some games over others in an arbitrary manner is surely clouding a very simple equation i.e. most points = most deserving! (controversial, I know![]()

Yup. Chavs win gives us some margin for error even scum win remaining games. Now, we might need to win both the games. But, 3rd place is still within our reach.Wilko 49er wrote:I cant see us getting 6 points. A chavs win may have done us a favour because then its 4 points and beat the scum in goal difference. Re: Weekend games - May the 4th be with you...
I started off the evening hoping Chelsea won so that a) the ball was automatically in our court regarding 4th; b) then anything but a Spurs win against Stoke would leave us needing only to beat Wigan to finish ahead of them - thus no concern about having to get anything at Newcastle.
I then realised when the second half began that a draw was actually our ideal result and for these reasons: it would make no difference to the fact that Spurs still require a win at Stoke (providing we beat Wigan); it keeps a tiring and pre-occupied Chavs side - as well as 3rd place - within our reach (and I fancy them to drop points against Villa).

Chelsea have to be the most arrogant team around. Don't know if it's just me but they seem to start showboating and taking liberties when they're playing well even when they're only one goal ahead, and sure enough committing too many men forward and being casual in possession punished them for the first. They should have hammered Spurs tonight but twice conceded poor goals.
And despite the Luiz love-in had he tracked the runner (Lennon?) for the first then the other defenders wouldn't have had the distraction (although Cahill should have undoubtedly closed down) and just didn't bother tracking Sigurdsson for the second at all. Torres was so fucking slow in possession in the second half and was walking around the place, although touch of class to set up Ramires'.
Anyway Chavs win would have been better but would have taken a draw beforehand. If we can't beat two shit teams on shit form then we don't deserve to play in the CL, and I wouldn't be surprised if Stoke took something off Spurs anyway.

That's why we need to be fearful if Mourinho does go back there, as one thing he will install is defensive discipline. Add that to their undoubted talent in midfield and a more potent forward line (with Chelsea likely to add another forward this summer) and they may well be the team to beat next season.northbank123 wrote:Chelsea have to be the most arrogant team around. That's among the reasons why I was hoping Sunderland would beat Stoke and Wigan beat Swansea, thus ensuring Stoke would still need something from the spuds game. Not sure what to expect from them now that they are safe.

Re: Weekend games - May the 4th be with you...
Obviously it wasn't intended in an absolute literal sense, after all 4th place is hardly a high bar to set from a club of our stature and resources and of course 3 points won in May ultimately count for the same as 3 points won in August in the league table.I Hate Hleb wrote:Erm......I refer you to g88ner's earlier post on this matter!!northbank123 wrote:... But I do think that failing to beat a shit team under the circumstances of knowing the points guarantee our season's goal would make it even less excusable and more disappointing. Not least because we can't use any excuses of other distractions like cup competitions, injuries, fixture congestion or lack of focus.

It is worrying. As much as I feel we've underperformed and set our targets too low for years now, it is even more ridiculous that Chelsea are knocking around with the likes of Spurs and Everton given their resources and playing squad. Add a quality striker and a few other astute signings and get them motivated and organised and they may well take some stopping next year.I Hate Hleb wrote:That's why we need to be fearful if Mourinho does go back there, as one thing he will install is defensive discipline. Brady - Stoke may hate us but they hardly have a soft spot for Spurs either. The tactics they've used against Spurs in their last two visits have been far more thuggish than in our last two visits, and I think their fans have the perception of Spurs as 'southern softies' in the same way as they do with us. I don't have any doubt that they'd love to effectively end Spurs' season by beating them. Had Spurs won tonight I think they'd have cruised it but despite a decent performance tonight they have been well below-par recently. Conversely the pressure's off for Stoke and even though they should have beaten Sunderland they've taken 7 points from 3 games and with the pressure off I think they might give Spurs a good game.
