So we've won ten consecutive away games, won 6 games on the bounce and now someone's calling Mertesacker a coward WTF????? What next... I really do wonder if some people on here actually support Arsenal...moving on 3 points in the bag and the toughest team in the group up next...

Think that I would rather have a good defender than someone who has a face that looks like it has been dragged through a barbed wire fence. I am reminded of the age old theory that suggests that a defender making all these great last ditch tackles is only having to make them because he wasnt reading the danger early enough and/or was caught out of position to begin with - I know that it is too much of a generalisation to suggest that but I also look back at paul mcgrath who was an outstanding defender and he left the game devoid of scar tissue on his face at least.

Also, you've obviously never met McGrath up close. I've met him twice (once at a pub promotion thing and once in Dublin airport) and he has the scars in and around his eyebrows.

Mertesacker a coward?

Absolutely. Without any shadow of a doubt. Fucking yellow streak a mile wide right down his jelly spine. NEVER goes in where it hurts, gets outjumped and outmuscled by OneBard Ewok type midgets, and worst of all turns his back on shots rather than launching into them to block them. Kos might be disaster prone and a bit of a lunger but he is mostly fearless.

Well yesterday he did "go in where it hurts" and got a boot to the face for it.

Some people have formed an opinion of Mertesacker, it won't change no matter what they see. He's been our best defender by a country mile since about 6 months after he joined the club. He could sit in our box clearing 100 crosses in a row by being in the right place but he might get his timing wrong and be outjumped on the 101th time and so obviously he's shit in the air. The timing of his tackling is absolutely superb and must be up there with the best in the world, every time he pulls one off (I remember one in the marseille game when I was sure the bloke had got beyond him) the only recognition he gets from commentators is "Oh, he's used his long legs there".

By far one of the most underrated defenders in the league. In fact, I'm not sure there's another CB in the premier league that I'd swap him for

Ah right! So one time in dozens of games he got shoved and bent over and a high foot came up near his head and that makes him brave!! Let's forget all the times he conciously made the decision not to go in where it hurts and all the times he let people outjump him and all the times he's turned his back on and ducked away from shots!!
