Do we really think he's any good? i thought we'd lost interest in him a year ago.

Re: ALL Transfer talk - merged thread
This guy is a good footballer and exactly what we don't have in midfield. He's a tough midfielder with a bit of spite about him, but can play as well. I wanted him when we were after him last year and would be very happy if we signed him now. I was going to mention him weeks ago and him and Amrabat would have been cracking signings. As it is, him and Rice would be a good duo.Midz wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 2:58 pmIn the Sun today

To be fair Augie, I wasn't talking about your opinion when we bought him, but more your rating of him last season. For me, he was better for the first half of last season than we'd seen before, but not great and I'm disappointed overall and would be happy to see him replaced.augie wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 8:38 pmRetro Gunner wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 7:53 pm
As much as I agree with you Augie, I'll be amazed if he signs a proper centre foward. It won't happen. He might sign another number 10/false 9 type, which he seems obsessed with, but can't see him going for the type of goalscoring striker you and I mean.
I want him to sign another top quality centre mid, whether Partey stays or not. I know you quite like Partey, but he arrived with quite a fanfare (I knew nothing about him) and for me he's been bang average at best and disappopinting overall. For the first half of last season I thought he was just better than we'd seen before, but I wasn't blown away in any way.
We won't go after Caicedo, but that's the signing I want.
Not quite correct there buddy - when he arrived to much fanfare, I cautioned over-hype because he looked good defensively in a very defensive team set up in Ath Madrid, and I worried if that masked weaknesses in his game. For the first two years with us he was ok but no better than that I would suggest, but I felt that in the first half of last season he was outstanding, and then absolute garbage in the last 2 months.
I'm old school in that I like my defensive midfielder to be an enforcer more than an interceptor, and I dont see an enforcer in our squad if partey goes - if we sold him and bought amrabat (for example) then I would be quite happy to sell him, but I dont see rice as a pure CDM
I agree that he wont sign a striker to take jesus's position in the team, in the same way that he wont buy a left full to take zinchenko's spot in the team - they are his boys, he trained them at citeeh, he brought them here, and his loyalty to them will lead to his downfall imo. We can do better than both of those players imo
He wasn't young when we bought him and I'm always wary when we spend that sort of money on a guy of around 24 or 25 and no one else is chasing him. It usually means we're paying to much for an average player. In Pepe's case, we paid 72m for an absolute dud.

Am I the only one who is beginning to think that our transfer plans are disjointed or not thought through ?

We were selling partey and now we are not. Rice was bought as a defensive midfielder, and now it seems he isnt cos he gonna be playing alongside partey. Havertz was bought and fcuk knows where he see's him playing cos all the noises coming out suggest el basque see's him playing in multiple positions. Timber was bought and the talk was that he is viewed as a versatile player but right back being his primary position, and then he comes on in MLS all star game in midfield - I understand the thought process that it is a benefit to have players that can cover multiple positions, but surely with new players the priority is to bed them into the team and get them used to our tactics first and foremost ? I have a growing feeling that edu and captain black are buying names off a list rather than buying to fill team needs - if he plays partey and rice together, it will put serious spotlight on why he bought havertz at all, UNLESS he then starts playing him or jesus in wide attacking positions, and of course that will then lead to questions again about smith-rowe's future
I said a few weeks back, some people were boxing very clever with how they sold the notion of buying havertz and overspending on rice by using the deservedly much maligned swiss turd as reference point (as in both signings are an upgrade on swiss c.unt), but the reality is that the swiss c.unt only had one place in starting 11 so both players cant be signed to replace him.
We knew going into this transfer window that we have a few positions in the starting 11 that need a proper upgrade, but it seems to me that it looks like our managers strongest starting 11 going into this season will see only one change from last season - in any circumstances that isnt good enough, but on back of spending 200m it would be totally unacceptable imo

Re: ALL Transfer talk - merged thread
There’s 2 scenarios with Partey -
1. He plays every week and eventually gets crocked.
2. He plays every week, amazingly doesn’t get crocked, but burns out two thirds of the way through the season because he hasn’t got the stamina for this league.
The former is what happened in his first two seasons, the latter is what went down last year when he tanked the final 10 games.
I hope we bin the fucker off, but if he stays the signing of Rice opens up a third scenario in that he won’t be playing as much so the likelihood of him getting injured or seeing his form bomb from burn out lessens dramatically.
That way the times we do see him in the team we should get the 8 or 9 out of version we know he can be rather than the 2 out of 10 we also know he can be.
Still hope he’s fucked out mind.

I would be ok with him being sold IF we then buy a defensive midfielder to replace him, but otherwise I would play him and rice together cos I dont think that rice is physical enough for the defensive midfielder role - I def think a midfield trio of rice, odeargod and havertz would be more open than katie's price's legs, and it would be a disaster waiting to happen. There has to be a plan in place if we are to progress, and I'm not sure there is - is Tierney being kept or sold for example ? There are obviously lingering question marks over the futures of balogun, nketieh, marquinos, vieira, and I would add smith-rowe to that list too - we are 3 weeks away from the start of the season, and we started off praising the club for getting business done early, but now we seem to have hit a brick wall, and as the chavs can testify, carrying too many players in your squad is not good for morale, and hinders preperations

Against the better teams it means we can play Partey and Rice as a double pivot and to add steel in the midfield to stop us getting over-run as has happened every year since PV4 and Petit left the club.
In ‘easier’ matches we can play one of them plus ESR or Havertz.
