I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday and was wondering if away boys CD's will be banned from now on (personally i hope so but thats nothing to do with Cashley songs)Chippy wrote:Just had a chat with Mrs C who is a very bright lady (and a bit of a pundit) who made the point that if we are going to be holier than thou about this we will have to also stop the Cashley chants and abuse. Hope you're all up for that.

That has been in the back of my mind all week. But moreso the fear that if one of the Dailys did pick up on this it would be in a general way i.e. they would write an article about all clubs and the songs that are sung. In the process slating The Arsenals supporters and briefly mentioning the ManUre, Spuds and Liverpool ones. I hope this isn't the case.Chippy wrote:Just had a chat with Mrs C who is a very bright lady (and a bit of a pundit) who made the point that if we are going to be holier than thou about this we will have to also stop the Cashley chants and abuse. Bloody good news; means i might have to buy an actual physical copy of the guardian tommorow. Also, ive been telling everyone i work with, and all the customers who come into the place i work to boycott the website, reactions been fairly good so far.Chippy wrote:I e mailed the Grauniad. As some of you may have realised I read it a lot. Just had this reply.
Vive la revolution.Hi John,
It's being covered by Marina Hyde in tomorrow's sport section and obviously is a worrying issue we're aware of and have been following.
Cheers

The fact that it was thousands singing that chant to at OT would make you wonder what kind of *word censored* them manure "fans" are.

People don't seem to appreciate just how severe and offensive the Wenger chant is. The only chats that compare and are as bad or worse than the Wenger one are those that mock people's deaths. Even racist chanting is no worse that whet Wenger has to deal with - it really is that bad.
Falsely accusing someone of sexually abusing children really is incredibly sick.
As a society we're becoming increasing aware of the impact such false allegations have. Many people in such situations lose their jobs, end up committing suicide, or or even get murdered by vigilantes believing the allegations to be true.
People who make such maliciously false allegations and try to destroy people's lives and reputations increasingly end up in jail these days (though not for nearly long enough). Inventing claims of abuse in order to try to harm another person is equally as bad as actual abuse itself given the damage it generally causes.
It really must be awful for your average person being falsely accused of something like this, but Wenger has to deal with a whole crowd of sick people shouting vile and abusive lies at him whilst he's try to do his job!
I can't think of any chants directed at any individual that are so baseless, disgusting and that actually allege such serious, awful and illegal wrongdoing.

Mrs C DOES have a point.Chippy wrote:Just had a chat with Mrs C who is a very bright lady (and a bit of a pundit) who made the point that if we are going to be holier than thou about this we will have to also stop the Cashley chants and abuse. Hope you're all up for that.
I'd be happy to make a "trade-off".
But there really is no comparison between accusing somebody of homosexuality (which is not a crime) and accusing somebody of molesting children.
If "homophobic" songs can be punished by the football authorities, then why can't slanderous songs be punished?

I am totally with you on that point oldgit - homosexuality is not a crime and as such taking the piss out of cashly *word censored* calling him gay is not a crime (to the best of my knowledge at least). When those chants turn abusive and offensive to the gay community in general then there is a problem but I fail to see how the songs "one man went to bed" or "cashly is a chav batty boy" can be classed as offensive to gays

Guardian artilce can be found here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog ... nt-arsenal
It's a more wide ranging article concerned with the chant itself and all the failings of the police, Manchester United and the FA etc.
Easily the best part of the article is the first paragraph:
"One is always loth to write off a policy before it has been given time to take effect, yet even though the Arsenal manager has only endured this one for 13 years, perhaps it is pertinent to inquire whether the police and the Football Association's strategy of doing precisely nothing can really be said to be making any inroads."

Decent article. I like this:
What then of the police, who have power vested in them by the 1991 Football Offences Act? Several Spurs fans who abused Sol Campbell at Portsmouth last September have been convicted this year, but Greater Manchester police have no record of any complaint being made by a member of the public on Saturday. Should they wish to act on their own initiative, they may care to start with the online vendors selling a downloadable version of the chant, presumably for people who don't have enough scumbag friends to sing along with them.
