As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
What about youth football, grassroots programmes? there are dozens of more worthwhile countries to hold it that qatar, not including the rival bidders.
Don't the people of Qatar and the middle east have a right to having youth football and grassroots programmes? As the previous world cup belonged to Africa this will belong to Middle East and I am all for it
Theyre a rich country who could afford to do that stuff without the world cup.
Its all about prestige. Nothing else. They have no base.
In that case the world cup will never be held there. Is that right then?
Is it right that in the country that invented football, two generations of people won't get to see a world cup even though we have the best stadiums etc.
Now you've gone all sentimental
Perhaps WORLD CUP should alternate between England and Germany and France and then let USA or some south American country host it every 12 years...

How did Qatar effect this? They were not up against England.
England lost and the citizens of this country need to accept that and stop being bitter about it. I am gutted as well but they lost and its time to move on.
marcengels wrote:Have Qatar done anything over the past 30 years in grassroots football, because they could certainly afford to so, more than other countries with a fraction of their wealth. What social programmes is the World Cup likely to bring into effect, or affect?
Iceman, I know you have a hard-on for Qatar, because you went there on holiday, or your brother lives in a country near to it, but would you deny that the compelling reason for FIFA executive to choose Qatar was money - after all, they had an average FIFA inspection.
I think I would have prefered a country that has tried, and tries, to insitute a football culture, than one that sees the World Cup was an affirmation of itself in the world.
Just because the Middle East hasn't had a world cup, does not mean it deserves it, and it is clearly not compelling reason enough. I have yet to see a compelling argument for Qatar.

Apparently, every seat in every stadium will be air conditioned, so you can cool down your balls as you watch the game

yet to be probably tested with the scale of a football stadium.
And the stadiums which are going to be taken down after the event? If that wasn't proof that this is just about a one-off event to increase exposure for the country, then I don't know what is. Where are the clubs to move into these stadiums? What development of football is exactly going to take place?

You make some good points there and I am sure money is involved in the whole process but I feel that now the decision has been made so its time for the world to get behind them. Coming out with this is wrong with Qatar and that is wrong with Qatar doesn't help. Qatar won it (maybe not fair and square) but I wish them the best of luck. We would have all preferred England but that did not happen. I was backing Qatar so I am fairly happy about that

Dont over hype it. Nothing like that is going to happen. Stop reading so much in to things

Not all the stadiums. I said some of the stadiums will be moved to poorer countries to help them. It is a one off event, yes. World cups usually are. They don't have that many football clubs in a small country like Qatar.
The development of football does not only take place in Qatar but the entire middle east. What you are forgetting is the ripple effect this will have in the region.
Where are the clubs in RSA now to take over their stadiums?
