anfield 89 anniversary

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

 :? Really ?????

Delorean Dor - You obviously weren't there or are a scouser on our board. How is it, that just because the goal came in injury time that it is the luckiest win?
The team had a lot of bollocks in those days and a manager who knew tactics inside out and the team played it out exactly as told. i was certainly lucky enough to be there that night and it goes down as the best night in all of my 30 years supporting the Arsenal, never to be beaten in my book.

On top of that we had lead the league for 4/5 months only to lose our way towards the end by losing to Derby and drawing with the Wombles. We won the league because we scored more goals than Liverpool and we averaged 2 goals a game away from home that season. And we had comfortably outplayed them already at Anfield that season in the Littlewoods cup but drew 1-1.

Of course you did!

What happened? Did Bruce Willis and Madonna cancel at the last minute? :(
Reeled in again DB10 !

No we were going to be interviewed for some London Weekend program "now at 6" ?? or something like that ,I was Living in Westport Ct and Working in Manhattan and the press found it incredulous that someone would come all that way for game that according to most we couldn't win by 2 Goals .

Watson who had recently beaten Benn was chosen because of his Arsenal link ,Radford for obvious reasons and moi for no reason I could see ,but had been informed of me by Arsenal . I agreed only because they would pick me up from Heathrow take me to my dads place in maida vale to change and then onto the LWT where Radford was ,we then picked Watson up at the De Beauvoir estate in Hackney N1 .
Watsons trainer who was a steward @ Arsenal hence the Football link (Watson didn't know much about football but liked the players when he went for physio) was an odious creep and insisted on getting in the car even though he wasn't part of the deal.
The interview on the pitch never took place beacuse of the horrendous traffic but by phone link they spoke first to Radford and then to Watson, when asked what the score would be he turned to us and asked and the Raddy the King and I said 2-0 !
We got to Liverpool and went to the Box Office where they had a ticket in the main stand for Raddy and Watson but none for the trainer who then caused a stink .
Radford knew the Liverpool secretary Mary who came out and offered John 2 seats in the Arsenal end which he accepted ,and I then gave mine to a pal outside who didn't have one so we watched the match together .
After the game O'leary spots Raddy in the crowd and points him out to George Graham who invites him onto the pitch to celebrate ,Radford declined stating "I've had my day this is theirs" ,Top man great company and i left him there to
meet up with my pals ,ended up having to drive a minibus full of drunks from Walton hospital to Highbury . . . . but that's another story ! A Great night and one I was sober at .........which was nice !

Thanks for the opportunity DB10 ,quality lead in !

Ha! Double reeled in! :barscarf:

I actually watched the game in Moscow. I had been asked by the KGB to fly in with Bill Clinton, then only a rising star in the American political firmament, but a man with inside knowledge of what would be a stupendous game of football at Anfield, this due to his wife once knowing a girl that had a cousin who lived in Islington and had seen Tony Adams drive by the stadium one day. Well, what a lark in Moscow! After we won, Bill flew me and a couple of KGB operatives back to Liverpool where we larged it up all night with the Arsenal team! I then had to fly Bill home as he was proper pissed and wanted to fight Niall Quinn because Quinn’s auntie had named her second child after George Bush Snr.

Anyone spot the difference between these two stories? Anyone?

I actually quite enjoy reading it tbh. Really is a great laugh! Your obvious wealth and amazing (and TRUE! ) lifestyle does upset me a tad though! But then it probably upsets Bill Gates too, huh? If only I was as rich as you... :D

I actually do believe Herd. I can also confirm that Michael Watson did live on the De Beauvoir estate with his family around that time (now lives in Chingford).

I believe Watson a little while back asked Arsenal for free tickets for a game, Arsenal said no, so Watson replied "ok fine, i'll support Man Utd"

Nice.
