Never thought Beckham was actually as good as his PR is, he'd be nothing much hadn't he had his looks to play for him. Can't see how he would add anything to your Team GB's mix.

I can't stand Beckham, I thought he was the most overrated player ever, could only cross a ball, had no tricks, but yet, I feel for him for missing out on this, I mean, who really gives a flying fuck about a GB football team? .... well, no one, apart from that *word censored* Pearce and his hidden agenda..

I think he should have been picked to play, he deserves an Olympic Gold to go with his FA Cup, Champions League, Rumbelows Cup, Euro Championship & World Cup winners medals. He is Mr Football and the sole reason the game was invented.

He was the best in his position (although never as good as the media would have you believe), now he's past tense as well as semi-retired and picking him would have been of no benefit to the team.

Personally don't give a toss for Olympic football but cannot understand the clamour for Beckham other than for nostalgic or ''he deserves a send off'' reasons.

I don't understand why you're so defensive Slag, yeah he used to be England's best RM and an important player for them a decade ago but the bloke gave up on his career at the top level 5 years ago when he moved to the US of A. The Olympics is a joke and I hope 'Team GB' embarrass themselves (and the concept of a British football team), but despite this surely the team should still be picked on merit and not PR, Beckham has become a celebrity who dabbles in football. Beckham has put in a good shift regarding the World Cup and Olympics bids but this doesn't mean he should get to participate.

If you think Beckham should be picked for the football for his work on the bid I can only presume you're also outraged that Seb Coe won't be running the 800m for GB???

He would be good enough to be a sub, not a 90 minute player, but he can still cross well and guide the younger players.

He travelled a lot and put work in to help get the Olympics and World Cup, and he has been snubbed in favour of Craig Bellamy?

Justified to pick Giggs and Richards.

I do not hate Beckham like others do, he never seemed to carry on as if he was rubbing it in when Man Utd won and he always worked hard for them and England.

I do not think he was crazy to go to the USA, he was looking at the bigger picture of helping spark interest in the sport in a country where it should have taken hold years ago.

That said I would have liked him to play for us for a couple of seasons before heading to LA, the deal was done but supposedly he wanted too high a salary which is possibly something he will regret when he looks back?
Then again he has made serious dough out there.

When all is said and done, he had the goldenballs to tell Ferguson what he thought of him.
May I just say, what an EXCELLENT post that is Quartz! :high5: I may not agree with all the points - and definitely do with some, but articulate and well presented.

It would have been a bit of a circus, especially if his talentless glamourwhore wife was in tow - which of course she would have been - any excuse to get her picture taken.

I do feel for him, as he wears his heart on his sleeve and cannot be blamed for loving his country and wanting to do good by it. I do think Pearce has an agenda and has used this as an opportunity to rais ehis own profile in the media, and part of me hopes it comes back to bite him firmly in arse.

I very much doubt the primary reason that Beckham went to the US was to spark interest in football. The Beckham brand, and his circle, could gain most from exposure in the US. He was looking to the future and what it holds for him. Fair enough, but I don't believe that he has been 100% comitted to US football, having put other things in front of playing/training with his club.

Ramsey in the squad.

Don't think we'll miss him, to be honest.

Can't be a bad thing, maybe being a big fish in a tinpot tournament is just what he needs. Would say it's a bit tough on Gibbs to be missing out given the dearth of quality in the squad but to be fair Bertrand did orite last year when he was given a chance and I really rate Neil Taylor at Swansea as a solid left-back for club and country.
