SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

Suarez is a smoke screen for Arsene. He knows the Mousers won't let him go for less than £50m - £60m, just as he knows the board will not allow him to spend that on one player. This Suarez thing is all so Arsene can say "But we tried to sign Suarez - we were maybe 1% or 2% away from signing him but the Mousers wanted silly money" when angry fans/shareholders etc have a pop at his project/transfer business next season because we are out of all the cups in January and scrapping for 4th AGAIN by Februarzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
These conspiracy theories are really getting tiresome. Clubs do not bid 40 million for players as a smokescreen. The fact the pound was included in the deal should show you how serious Arsenal are about signing him. Don't make sweeping statements about something, when the facts point to the real truth.
People blindly believing every word out of Arsene's mouth is what's tiresome.

And who said anything about conspiracy theories? I certainly didn't. But judging by Wenger's previous modus operandi I fully believe he is just doing an excercise is demonstrating that we are now seriously trying to sign a big name when in truth he has no intention whatsoever of actually completing the signing. Wenger has been under more pressure in the last two years than at any time in his career and this season that pressure will be ramped up. He needs to show the fans, the media and the shareholders that Arsenal are not now just a selling club and that we are still contenders, thus the bid for Suarez is high enough to trigger the notification clause but not high enough for the Mousers to sell. Remember, Wenger doesn't buy superstars - he makes them. Well, in his own deluded mind he still does...

How many times have we heard Arsene state rubbish like "I nearly signed so and so"?

Well, that would be another decent defensive midfielder that we were previously linked to out and this time beaten to by high-flying Cardiff.

Have to say that even though I accept the argument that fellaini is over-rated (not sure I agree tho) I still think that we should go in NOW and activate his release clause. Even if he isn't top top drawer he is still better than anything we have for the DM position and by his own admission the DM position is his proper position.

Decent? Says who? I don't know a lot about the guy but i'm willing to bet that Cardiff is about his level and i'll be surprised if he sets the world on fire even there. Let's revisit this in 12 months and see if we're all banging on about how good Etienne Capoue of Cardiff is...

I agree, I think we should activate the clause now, I think Fellani would be a great signing, cant understand why we havent made an offer yet, oh yes I can its because of that *word censored* Wenger. I would have been happy with Higuain, Fellani and a central defender, but as usual we will end up with fuck all

Yeah he's the type of bloke that nobody will have actually seen much of (barring Footballing Overlord Highbury JD). Given that nobody has come in for him the last few transfer windows despite speculation and that he appears to be set to go to Cardiff then I don't think we're really missing out.

And you can bet damn sure that loads on here (me included) wouldn't have been too happy had we signed a central midfielder from a mid-table Ligue 1 club, particularly given that it would probably be our main signing of the summer.

I still can't get my head round this embarrassment logic.

If you were told a laptop, car, house or footballer had a release clause, by which any some over that amount would trigger a sale, how much would you offer? and why?

Surely if you believe a contract states >£40m as a trigger, then £1 over that amount is sensible. If it wasn't, why have the clause?

This embarrassment is misplaced and you shouldn't be fooled into handing over more money than is necessary just to avoid embarrassment. It's business. Cold and clear. So put emotions to one side and deal with the facts of the contract.

The only embarrassment is surely Suarez' agent for seemingly failing to secure a proper release clause in the first place.
If £40mill was/is the amount that allows the player to be spoken to (release clause or whatever) then £40mill would suffice, to add £1 is Pathetic AND shows a total lack of Class.

FACT.
The speed in which people on here bash the club is phenomenal.
You mean in the same way some people are blind to the truth

northbank123 wrote:I don't see the problem with the £1 bit - aimed to ensure that we trigger a clause, what's the problem with that?
Nothing wrong with that at all. People are getting their knickers in a twist over a legal technicality.

Ken Bates famously bought Chelsea for £1... I wonder if he was embarrassed? :rubchin: - maybe he should have offered £10m to save face, even though it's money down the pan?

It's Liverpool and Suarez' agents fault about the £1. If they'd worded the contract differently, perhaps we could have offered £40m and people wouldn't be criticising Arsenal for it.

Also, some people are suggesting we trigger Fellani's release clause, which is what £23m? - will these people be embarrassed if we don't add an extra £5m for good will?

This is business. Leave your emotion at the door, and deal with the contract. Surely? :?

He's a French international defensive midfielder. He is good in the tackle and fantastic in the air. He is 25. Sure, he probably won't set the world alight at Cardiff, but who would considering that they will be fighting tooth and nail against relegation. I doubt that anyone would. BUT - he won't break the bank, he will act as cover for Arteta and his best years are ahead of him.

I think that is is criminal that we aren't considering him especially when we all know that we aren't in for Fellani or really any midfielder. I believe that Wenger said the other day that our midfield is crowded which tells me that he is probably counting Diaby as a player or thinking of playing Ramsey there.

The Arsenal golden rule coming into full affect this window.

Any player linked longer for longer than 2 weeks won't sign.
