Didnt Modric have just 3 assists last season? Think he is grossly overated

I may have exaggerated saying sp*rs have a stronger squad than us but they have succeeded in replacing their best players when they leave, something we seem to have consistently failed to do...

Re: Sp*rs ambition
To be honest I think Levy has done what Dein used to do, which is go and get most of the players he wanted. No animosity towards him, just a feeling of "Another window shuts without us buying who we need".
I would have really liked to have seen Vertonghen, Dembele and Dempsey bought by us this summer.
No getting away from it, Spurs have made good signings.
I think we made only half the signings we needed.

To be hon the spuds summer dealings used to alarm me, but we have been here b4 and they always fuck up.
This time they are in a worse state than us, they have replaced modric and vdv with dempsey and a keeper.
Results so far suggest avb is a great bet for first sacking

Agree re Levy doing Dein's job. Had Levy been round in the mid-90s and Dein not then Bergkamp would probably be a Spurs legend (sickening thought).QuartzGooner wrote:To be honest I think Levy has done what Dein used to do, which is go and get most of the players he wanted. Don't think they've done that well this summer though. Defensive unit is a shambles with Kaboul injured especially and Vertonghen won't change that. Dempsey will be a glorified Charlie Adam: good at a smaller club but never going to reproduce his goals tally etc at a bigger club, he's a luxury player like VDV (albeit not lazy). Do think Dembele is a good signing and Lloris is a great snatch, but overall their squad is no stronger really than last year and they'll be over-reliant on Bale for creating & scoring goals. Clearly their fans share much of the pessimism, booing them off.

They added France's number 1
They replaced Modric with Dembele
They replaced van der vaart with Dempsey.
van der vaart is a better player but appeared to be subbed a lot - so that, and with his injuries, would probably see Dempsey as a better bet for a couple of season for spurs.
Modric is a very talented player and I haven't seen enough of Dembele to know how they will fare - but I guess they were looking at the Moutinho thing (which was being done until they ran out of time

They do have problems in all areas though, which is a comforting thought

Re: Sp*rs ambition
I'd forgotten about Dembele, but I still feel there is a certain deja vu about the spuds, they've made these sort of signings before with piennar, kranckjaer (spelt wrong) the vastly over rated parker and you could even go back as far a davids. As for lloris, he is a shot stopper but is a bit of a flapper when it comes to crosses, not an attribute which will lend itself to pl football, I can see Friedl still no1 come may.arseofacrow wrote:fast and loose with the truth once again sidgoonersid wrote:To be hon the spuds summer dealings used to alarm me, but we have been here b4 and they always fuck up.

avb is under pressure already, booed off 2 weeks on the trot at home and they haven't played top side yet.

Re: Sp*rs ambition
Not buying this whole 'modric overrated' fad that seems to be going round. Fact is in the modern game the assists come mainly from the furthest forward midfielder or from out wide which in Spurs case was usually van der fart/bale/lennon. Someone go and dig up Wilshere's assist statistics (steady on DB10) for the season before last and they'll tell you a similar thing. Midfielders like Jack and Modric set up the play with their close control, intelligent first touch and quick passing.
Modric is a class central midfielder who was at the heart of almost everything "good" (for want of a better word) that T*ttenham did. Dembele is a talented player and he'll score some cracking goals but he's not a direct replacement for modric, nowhere near the consistency levels, reading of the game or passing.
Its not just Babatunde, although he's by far the worst, but its been bugging me for a few years now how some gooners idealise everything Spurs do. Is it to reinforce the point about how far we've fallen or just fans fearing the worst?

Re: Sp*rs ambition
Just done my own homework...
Jack Wilshere 2010/11(league): 35 apps, 1 goal, 3 assists
Yet anyone who watched our matches that year knew Jack was easily one of the best central midfielders in the league.

Re: Sp*rs ambition
I think the "lack of stats" is interesting and I wholeheartedly agree - Wilshire dictates the play and is the one who sees everything in front of him. That's why stats are the work of the devil. which means you are doing the devil's work. and I'm listening to the devil
