Banana Boy - Were Laws Really 'Bent'?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

It will be interesting what he gets ,remember this is WHL were only a few short years ago one of their junior "firm" jumped onto the pitch and took a swing at Lampard and only got fined 300 quid and got a 3 year ban from football.
Trainee architect Timothy Smith, 18, of Datchet, near Slough, was given a three-year Football Banning Order and fined £300, plus £50 costs at Haringey Magistrates' Court
I was amazed at the time he got off so lightly and he had another co conspirator who also got off I believe .
It should be taken in the spirit it was ,a Jape at an Ape but I bet you they throw the book at him !

.....having a banana with intent. You couldn't make this up!!

Ok. I accept that he shouldn't have done it. But what about a bit of consistency here... What about all the other objects thrown onto the pitch that day? Every time an arsenal player took a corner they were showered. Any news whether the throwers have been similarly hunted down? No, obviously not.

For some reason this guy has been singled out purely because of the racist link re-bananas, which is so far from the truth it is laughable!

As an aside to this, ive been to a few Leeds away matches with a pal of mine when spare tickets were going and always noticed that no one sits in their allocated seats. Well no one sits fullstop, its just a case of rock up and stand somewhere with your mates. My pal said they do this so when they want to be nooorrrtyyy and sing libellous songs about Davie Jones etc it cant be traced back to them as no one’s in their allocated seat.

Might be an idea that with the increasing kosh we find ourselves under by the authorities and over zealous stewarding but I can’t see this happening at an Arse game though what with the JCL’s. ‘erm excuse me sir, I believe your sat in my seat, please kindly move before I call a steward’.

Had a guy & his Mrs try this with me in Munich on Wednesday. At a Euro away game? Really? Come on mate. He was told politely, but firmly, where to go.

They rocked up 20 mins after kick off anyway. "Excuse me, these are our seats." Not anymore they're not mate

Well all shuffled up a little & made space for em. They fucked off immediately as soon as the whistle went too. :censored:

At Schalke, and again in Munich, we went and stood by our allocated seats like nice obedient little gooners. The club would have been proud of us :barscarf: !

Anyway, do you really think that the German's off all people would tollerate people not being in the right seat....completely inefficient!!

It was definitely funny, and really ironic considering he's a white player with this whole racism crisis in football.

But at the end of the day, an object thrown onto the field of play is a missle, and that should appropriately lead to a ban. Doesn't matter if it's a coin, beach ball, flare or otherwise. The only ones I can see as possibly OK are paper streamers thrown towards players taking corner kicks - it's not sporting, but it's also not with intent to injure or defame, and it doesn't interfere with the play on the pitch itself.

Not trying to steal the fun, but there surely can't be much debate about this, "Arsenal 2013" or otherwise.

But my point is what about all the other objects thrown at players at that match.... Is this the only one that they have tracked down and action being taken against? If that's the case then it's wrong. I'd rather someone threw a banana at me than a coin!

I'm not sure what the furore on this thread is about either.

I'm sure we all knew throwing bananas on the pitch was an offence, and if caught you'll be punished. If you expected Arsenal or any club to back a fan throwing bananas at players because the player in question was Gareth Bale, well I don't know what you're on.

Is a lifetime ban harsh? Maybe, was it funny? perhaps only if you don't get caught. Was it worth it, no.

Due to banana throwing usually being a racist gesture it was bound to catch the eye of the authorities and it did.

I agree.... It's turned into a witch hunt and Arsenal FC appear to have been one of those leading it - which I think should concern us all. At the end of the day it was a fucking piece of fruit!!
