MOST UNDERRATED ARSENAL PLAYER IN OUR HISTORY

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I think players like Parlour and Davis were never underrated. They were recognised as quality at the time they played.

My choice was Kevin Richardson. Overlooked but vital tackling workhorse in the 89 title win.

This might sound strange but Freddie Ljungberg for me doesn't get the recognition he deserves, especially seeing as hes an invincible. Everyone always looks to Pires over him. Freddie showed bags of brilliance in 01/02, and his red streak was awesome, I was nine years old in '02 and copied it immediately. Plus he isnt on the outside of the ground either which for me is a disgrace. I loved his attitude when playing, he always seemed to put in more effort than other players, and was generally lovable. :barscarf:

Also, does anyone else wonder if wedve kept him for 07/08 he cudve been that leader the team lacked?

2006 - 2007 Freddie was a shadow of the player he had been three seasons earlier.
Back, hamstring and illness problems made him seldom fit, and when he played he looked slower and had less acceleration than in his prime.

I think we kept him a season too long.

Iloved Freddie too in the early days and 01/02 with the red hair...towards the end though he was nothing compared to the early days :(

I agree with both of you, but still, he deserves to be on the outside of the ground at least, he was an Arsenal icon in his first few years with us

Freddie had 1 outstanding season 1 ok season the rest was pretty poor. I think he was over rated not under.

Absolutely not. He was appalling for us in 2006/07, and seemed to be simply going through the motions and collecting his paycheck. I couldn't believe that Wenger had kept him around for so long, when he was constantly injured and putting in dire performances.

His 'contributions' to West Ham in the 2007-08 season alone answer your question.

Alan Smith. Won the Golden Boot twice and we won the league both times he did so. Scored over 100 goals for the club including the winner in one of only two European Trophies we have won. Of course he is highly rated but for my money he should be an all time legend on a level with the likes of say, David Seaman, just below the greatest Gooners like Adams and Henry, and I don't think he is.

John Radford is another who for our 4th highest ever goalscorer never seems to get as much acclaim even as his strike partner Kennedy.

Maybe it was the type of player both Smith and Radford were, unspectacular but very very effective.

Alan Smith. He won 2 golden boots and then Wright came and everyone forgot what Smith had done before.
He only gets talked about now when people dont like what he says.

I think Jens Lehmann is often under-rated. He's more remembered for his crazy antics, and people forget just what a world-class talent he was.

He didn't lose a single league game in his first season, won us the FA Cup the next, and then set the CL record for most consecutive clean sheets the next.

And then dropped for two errors. Another huge AW mistake. Just think, we could've stuck with Lehmann up until this past May.
