What other games at Highbury are up there with that one mate for atmosphere would you say......Herd wrote:The atmosphere for the Villa game was one of the best I've ever seen at Highbury for a day game and as stated it was rocking .
I'm not sure what they announce the crowd at but I think it was around 57,000 but it was the beginning of the slide !
Stapleton as you say walked out for MUFC and Brady had gone to Juventus .
Brady was on pitiful wages at Arsenal if I remember, around 7,000` pounds per year ,I think he asked for 15,000 and they turned
him down , Juventus paid him a massive 30,000 ,Stapletons situation was much the same .
The good thing of course was that Arsenal leaned their lesson and have never allowed their best players to go elsewhere because of money or lack of ambition sicne that time ,have they ?

I always had a soft spot for the 83 cup quarter final v villa, my first ever cup match, crammed into the clock end, saw both goals and the crowd was going fecking mental
not to mention the united cup match when mclair missed his penalty, the *word censored*

Re: Chelsea to win the league at AG?
Yeah been so many.....before my time but been told Anderlecht the Fairs Cup Final at Highbury in 1970 was one of the greatest, lost 1-3 over there and beat them 3-0 at home, in what was the first trophy in ages....
Re: Chelsea to win the league at AG?
Anderlecht for me was the best I was a very young boy and sat in the East stand with my dad I remember it as if it were yesterday .
Whilst we have had some great day games , Everton home last game of the season with the great TA rounding it off the 4th goaL is a favorite but there's been so many .
For some reason night games always had that edge though and there are so many Its difficult to pick but for pure malice the Home game against MUFC after we had won the league hours before was as funny as they get .
Three banners with stick your fucking two points up your arse made up on bedsheets with spray paint , the ground rocking Brian Robson getting studded by Davis as Robson tried to foul him (i think) getting taken off and having the whole crowd sing Robson Robson man of the match ,the few UTD there walking out b4 half time and endless songs of " you can stick your fucking two points up your arse sideways "
Any match V's Millwall Chelsea or the Middlesex maggots and plenty with MUFC n Liverpool as it always got the place going !

Highbury atmospheres is a much better topic than The Chavs winning the title at our place!
The '88 League Cup SF 2nd leg v Everton sticks in the memory inside and outside in Avenell Road.

Also one of my favourite games, there's nothing like an evening cup game where we really turn it on.Eboue-Why? wrote:Highbury atmospheres is a much better topic than The Chavs winning the title at our place!

And it was a great few days as we had beat ManU in the FA Cup a few days earlier. McClairs last minute penalty miss was the start of a good period of bad feeling

Both games were 50k + if my memory is any good!

I was in the Everton end for this game, because the queues for the North Bank where horrific and it seemed like the only way I would get in to watch the game. Their end whilst pretty full wasn't rammed like the north bank and although I had to keep quiet for 2 hours I was in total awe of how noisy we where that night. It must have been quite intimidating for the away fans and their team. Truly our fans where like the 12th man.spot wrote:Also one of my favourite games, there's nothing like an evening cup game where we really turn it on.Eboue-Why? wrote:Highbury atmospheres is a much better topic than The Chavs winning the title at our place!

Do you know anything about the Glasgow Rangers visits to Highbury, think they were for a pre season Friendlys, stopped around 69/70 i think, that must have been amazing with the travelling hordes from North of the border.
Understand Arsenal had a large Skinhead following at the time
Re: Chav$ to win PL at AG? / Atmos at Highbury
I remember the Glasgow Rangers match's only for the devastation the Jocks brought to the neighborhood , they arrived overnight in hordes, pissing in peoples gardens sleeping rough some broke into the ground I was told and slept in the stands .
I lived in Drayton Park at the time when my my sister and I went to Highbury fields to play on the swings we were confronted with masses of drunken people draped in red white n blue and tartan with iffy mullet Rod Stewart haircuts who it would appear didn't speak a word of English, and this at 9am .
We were terrified and ran home and wern't allowed out the rest of the weekend .
I was told that they went into every crevice of the ground and had a royal battle with Jon Hoys boys , they kept throwing bottles everywhere in the north Bank and many were injured .
As a result Arsenal who where very friendly with Rangers Directors and in fact Rangers had a small share holding ,called the matches off at Highbury which had been annual events with the venues alternating. Rangers went on to cause havoc at other grounds too in the 60's n 70's .
On a positive note the Rangers link is why Arsenal were the ONLY club in Division 1 NOT to have fences .
Hillwood was at Ibrox in 66 and saw the crush and formed the opinion that in the case of emergencies the pitch is the safest place to be ............of course he was very right .
I think the last one was in 1967/8 pre-season so I was 9 at the time !
After that we have played them in Scotland a few times i one of them I went to early 80's was remarkable for one of the very few appearances in an Arsenal shirt of a striker who cost us a million quid ..........Clive Allen !

Great info- I didnt realise Clive Allen played any matches for us at all before he was swapped for Kenny
I do miss the annual Scotland v England games, or at least the club games, the Jocks were amazing and totally mad supporters. Similar memory of being on a train near Wembley one season Jock got on barely an inch of him had anything but tartan, 9am, as the train set off he lurched foreward towards my mate who we all thought was about to be stabbed, but he was over wiskied and just lost his balence. we all had a great laugh and a chat (Such as it was with a slurring Scotsman who has slept in the siding all night between bottles)
LMAO at the thought of breaking in and sleeping on the terraces. Its all so serious these days, imagine that happening in club section

Re: Chav$ to win PL at AG? / Atmos at Highbury
Sounds like your writing a book ,yes I remember it well first match of the season boiling hot day massive crowd but only announced as 50 odd thousand (mmmmm) .
People got in earlier for big matches and there was a lot of taunting going on , Some Cockney reds had got into the North bank and had been rebuffed from the back ,but went whilst soem walked round to the clock via the west stand ,some went down the front and then Arsenal started singing we'll fight you on the pitch ....... first 1 then 2 then 10 then 20 then about 3,000 MUFC came on to the pitch from the clockend which was heaving with utd whilst at the North Bank Arsenal surged forward only to discover the routed C.Reds at the front and a massive battle erupted .
Fair play to plod who managed to eject the reds onto the pitch from the North Bank then corral them back to the clock end but it took them some time .
There are some pictures of this day on the internet with some fans sitting on the roof of the north bank and some arsenal who looked more like the band sweet getting led away !
We won 3-0 and Geroge Graham scored from memory !
I think clive allen played for us at rangers, then up aberdeen which I missed ,and perhaps 1 more pre season match that I cant remember now !
