I watched the Crimewatch programme last night out of pure curiosity, and was absolutely flabbergasted when during an interview with the Mc Canns, they revealed that on the morning prior to her disappearance, Madeleine had asked at breakfast where mummy and daddy where when her and her little brother were crying last night, which brought an awkward silence.
So despite their little girl and boy waking up crying whilst they had been out the previous night, they went and did the same thing the very next night.
Now I have no doubt that they loved their little girl very much and are still grief stricken, but honestly. I just cannot understand their thinking, nor never will.

As heartbreaking as Crimewatch was last night that admission by the McCanns is haunting. I have a lot of sympathy for them and they know what they did wrong without me and the world telling them , but the fact they made a "mental note " to check on the kids is alarming. A family holiday is exactly that, you play, eat and stay together. Of course parents need to be able to unwind with a drink etc in the evening but there were surely facilities available. i genuinely do not want to be judgmental of the McCanns but that comment or that admission that their child was frightened and crying the previous night is shocking.

Thought exactly the same thing when I heard that part. Seriously, none of us can say with absolute certainty that we would have acted any differently but I'd like to think that I would have had my kid said those words to me.

Sorry Hlebby mate but are you kidding? I can say with absolute certainty that I would, and do, act differently. For one my kids would never have to say those words to me because two, I would never ever go off and leave my children alone in a room in a building in a foreign country (or at home either) whilst I went off to another building to eat or drink! Not in a million years. My kids are 9 and 8 now and we were in Portugal on hols the summer Maddie went missing - my daughter was 3 years old and my boy was 2 - and I wouldn't leave them anywhere alone now, never mind back then!!

Sorry Hlebby mate but are you kidding? I can say with absolute certainty that I would, and do, act differently. 100% DB, when we go on holidays the kids are with us all the time (my 13 year old obviously gets a lot more slack now) In the evenings when they go to bed we actually wedge a chair against the apartment door before we would even sit on the balcony to have a glass of wine.
It was actually funny the first time we took our eldest to Majorca, he would have been about 4, we put him into bed and because he had a window that faced on to the balcony we told him that under no circumstances was he to open the window and if anyone came to the window he was to come straight to our room.
So we got him settled down despite still being excited on the first night of his hols. Myself and the missus poured ourselves a drink and went out onto the balcony, and immediately locked ourselves out of the apartment. So the poor little lad wasn't in bed 10 mins when there we where knocking on his window.

Yeah, the fucking place where they were staying did! And they didn't use it, despite the kids being upset at being left alone the previous night.

Honestly, if they were 20-something unemployed parents as opposed to doctors in their 40s, they'd have got slaughtered by the press.

Don't get me wrong DB10, that was also my initial reaction and still the correct one. But it seems these people had characters and a 'lifestyle' which meant that they were used to doing this kind of thing and probably didn't think twice about it. That is why I referred to hoping that in the same position (and predisposed mindset) I wouldn't have gone back out the night following Maddie's comments about being scared.

The guilt they must feel is horrendous so I feel for them, even if I'm disturbed by what they did. Chances are that whoever took Madeleine noticed that they left her alone while they went off to eat too. I believe they ate pretty close by, but what a price to pay for their bad decision.
It also may have contributed to the initial suspicion of them shown by the local police. The first 72 hours are so important when looking for a missing person apparently.

They do - I remember reading about it and the McCanns said something about not wanting to leave their kids with the babysitting service which was strange because it was the same people that looked after them in kids club in the day and very reasonably priced (especially for two high-earning professionals!).

I can't imagine what this must have done to them but I have to say they haven't shown a tenth of the guilt I'd expect from somebody in their position when they've given TV interviews etc. I don't have to have kids to say that it was completely unfit parenting and imo it borders on criminal neglect to leave 3 young kids alone out of sight (and clearly out of mind) at night in a foreign country - especially in such an unsecure setting.

Don't like Christmas? Fine, you can fucking come in and work then and not be allowed to take any leave in December. They should let me run the HR department...

Indeed - that system has allowed me to go to Thailand for 18 days over xmas/new year whilst only taking 5 days off work
