SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I'd love us to sign Ozil as he is a top top world class player. 8) But we are in far more need of a top class keeper, another CH, a striker and a left back that can actually cross more than 1 ball in 100.

Likewise - I certainly wouldn't complain if we signed Ozil because he's the type of player that the top 3 clubs are dreaming of attracting there and is sheer class. I think it's safe to say he's the type of signing everyone would get wet thinking about him playing and frankly for all our 'stability' our lack of signings has understandably harboured little excitement amongst the fans.

But I'd still judge this window as a failure because we've not strengthened the areas we need to and we're absolutely not going to win the league if we play Szczesny in goal and Giroud as a lone striker.

Also it would have been disappointing had United signed Ozil anyway but imagine if they do now...

Without bale and an injured lennon, tottenham looked distinctly one paced. The players who came in for the spuds have just found out how fast our league is. You dont get a seconds rest and after a huge effort from our lads in the first half it started to take its toll late on.

Wenger has the opportunity to put right what he should have done earlier in the summer. There is no doubt our first 11 when they are on their game are competitive, but we musnt rest on our laurels and address the lack of strength in depth. Ramsey is much improved this season, super tom when fit is a wizard on the ball. Flamini although I am not happy with the way he left us beefs up our midfield.

We really are only 3 or 4 players away from mounting a serious bid for silverware, if we can get two today that will be at least a start.

Other thing about yesterday was the gooners where 100% behind the team, the atmosphere was electric it really was backs to the wall stuff in the last few minutes.

Theres been too much whingeing going on most forums, so we should give a balanced view and give credit after a monumentous result. 1-0 and we spent fuck all!

As much as a lot of what you say is true, I would say it takes a while for a team to gel and on the face of it they have a strong, athletic team that just needs a bit of flare and time to get to know each other.

The flare they've solved with Eriksen and the player I think will really do it for them is Lamela. Anyone who saw this kid play for Roma last season knows he is good. Soldado I think is a poor off the ball player and would probably have suited us better in that he seems to only come alive in the penalty area.

As far as our so called targets are concerned Di Maria, a diving little b*tch that looks physically lightweight,Demba Ba (hate this expression but it sums him up)..MEH, Ozil ..good but where are the 2 key players a good defender and a decent keeper.

Even if we spend it'll be overpriced and as usual in the wrong areas of the team.

Lots of 'tweets' eminating from Milan people saying we have had formal talks with them about El Shaarawy. He was benched for the last game.

Yup! Ozil IS Pure class. BUT, we still need a GK (to teach the gobby pole about decision making and how to shut the feck up on twitter etc) a DCH and a striker.

Ozil would be the best signing since Sol Campbell...........but it's not 'likely' to happen, there are too many things against us.....
If United want him he will probably go for them - he can win things there and they will pay more in wages
We have Wenger and Dick Law handling the transfer, it is like the Chuckle brothers putting the government Budget together!
He would have to be pretty pissed off at Madrid to want to leave for Arsenal - a team who has stood still (at best) for 7-8 years.

There's still time for the French and Africans to come in and that's what I fully expect tonight, unknowns and one season wonders, all bought for way too much money.

Cynical?? How can any Gooner be any different after the last 7 years or so??

OZIL TO ARSENAL?
Spanish football writer Andy West: "Mesut Ozil's potential departure from Real Madrid is possibly the most interesting storyline to follow. Last season he was one of Los Blancos' key players and widely regarded as an indispensible member of the team - never mind the squad - but the arrival of Isco and Bale means something will have to give...and so far it's been Ozil.

"The Germany international reacted angrily to being substituted at Granada last weekend, and he didn't feature at all in yesterday's victory over Athletic Bilbao. However, latest rumours suggest he's set to rebuff Arsenal's interest and fight for his place in Madrid. We'll keep a keen eye on that one."

OZIL ISN'T COMING

Viviano might be coming
Ba on loan might be coming

Back to the old financial motivation versus on pitch success argument eh ?

I cannot understand why some people cannot read people's posts properly - there is nobody, and I mean nobody, here that doubts that ozil is anything less than top quality, and yes he will have fans jumping out of their seats but will he provide that defensive stability that we badly need ? Will he provide that cover at CB that we badly need (we have 3 centre backs including sagna ? Will he provide that competition for chesney in the goals and to be a quality back up if/when the young pole has another one of his brain farts or gets injured ? Will ozil prove to be a top quality partner/alternative to giroud ?
Again I will say that ozil is top quality and in todays market is def worth 40m and if he was all we needed to challenge then I would have no probs spending that type of money but the facts are that we have other (more pressing even ?) needs and 40m takes a major chunk out of the kitty[/quote]

Probably best post i've seen here all summer. I posted a few days back that after waiting all these years for AFC to finally spend i would feel pretty disappointed if we broke our record on the likes of Torres or my current worry di Maria. I think I'd have a similar feeling about Ozil because as the above poster states, aside from his undoubted quality, he's hardly the player we really need right now and far from being someone who really wants to join us he appears to be someone being unwillingly shunted out of Madrid. As for the other 4 or 5 players we desperately need to bring in to flesh out the squad, surely AW must see that our first 11 is good but we're in exactly the same situation that prompted the 8-2 if we don't add additional numbers. Just an odd comment but rather than spend big on Cabaye I'd rather take a punt on Shaun Maloney as a cut-price midfield squad player. I've always rated him and think he'd fit seamlessly into our team/style. If not bomb him out in 6months at a slight loss.
