think we should be pleased with the fact we won, should have scored more then one but thats football, we didnt dominate enough for my liking and look a bit lightweigh in the middle but then denilson and eboue wont be our regular midfield, but first game over and 3 points so we will settle for that

Have to say I couldnt see that Eboue was that good from my sleepy state but Gallas and Nasri looked great today. And even Almunia looked a bit more commanding. Bendtner and Ade didnt work at all as a partbnership, anyone know why RVP was on the bench to start with? Then i fell asleep through the Spurs game and hit the beach... 8)

Mexico is such a beautiful country...and it seems that Mexico is the theme of the day, as Gus apparently met another foum regular - North Bank Mexican - by chance, before the game! F*ck it, i think I'll make it a Mexican hattrick...now where did I put that Tequila? 8)

Well, anyway...got back an hour ago, and I have to say I'm pretty damn happy with the way the afernoon panned out.

Almunia - No handling errors, and a decent save too...2 clean sheets in a week, will do him the world of good.

Gallas & Djourou - Played well individually, but worried the hell out of me all afternoon, as a partnership...and never was this more true than when Djourou & Gallas were on a different wavelength..allowed Miller in, and if it wasn't for Almunia, it'd be 1-1. What Gallas did next, was not, in my opinion, the actions of a captain, and he even needed to be calmed down by Almunia, who was trying to stop Gallas bitching and moaning at Djourou

Sagna & Clichy - Got forward well, and defending solidly too. Caught up field once or twice, but that's all part of the system we play.

Denilson & Eboue - Are they the Petit & Vieira of the 2008 class? er..no, but Denilson played well (and got an assist) and even Eboue, woeful shooting apart, actually did ok

Walcott - Didn't do much for me, but then again, does he ever play well when played from the start? he's all about pace still, and he just doesn't influence the game enough until matches get stretched in the last 20 mins or so....still only good enough as an impact player, for me.

Nasri - :bowing21:

Adebayor - Greedy, woeful finishing, and was off-side too often

Bendtner - Little impact really.

The first matches of a season are all about the result...winning becomes a habit, and even though we played poor second half, the fact we won and kept a clean sheet, will do our young side the world of good! 8)

Oh, and Spurs lost!   perfect 8)

You know, I think we should guard against hyping up Nasri so quickly. I don't think his performance was sensational, but it was solid and looked good amongst a very average team performance. Had he not scored, I doubt he'd be getting comments like the one I quoted.

Not trying to be a pessimist, because I was really encouraged by his performance, and he was our best player on the day.

I disagree Tony. I can't speak for others, but his performance, for a debutant in an unfamiliar league, was highly impressive, irrespective of whether he scored or not.

My bowing comment, was merely a way to avoid repeating what others have already said about him on this thread...and wasn't really intended to bestow upon him a knighthood

I think that the intelligent amongst us aren't going to get carried away by 90mins of football....but for me, he was man-of-the-match. Yes he scored, but it was his movement during the move that stood out rather than the tap-in itself, and throughout the game, his movement and intelligence was fantastic, and you can see already that both him and Cesc are the players who will dictate the way we play.

His workrate was also very impressive, and considering he's a creative player, I thought it was great to see him harassing and chasing lost causes and closing players down, in a way that his predecessor, Hleb, was hardly known for.

I think Tony Saunders is right about hyping the lad. However, I thought he was outstanding today.

I will reserve judgement for a couple of months. We've seen one or two have impressive debuts and then not re-produce it - Glen Helder anyone? (I only use that as an example and not a comparison)
